
Yankees Start Strong; Win 6-3

STATEN ISLAND, NY- The Staten Island Yankees (20-16) scored four runs over the first four innings to beat the Connecticut Tigers 6-3 before 4,306 fans at Richmond County Ballpark on Thursday night.
The Yankees scored two runs in the second inning against Connecticut starter RHP Clemente Mendoza (2-4). 1B Kyle Roller (2-4) singled and moved to third base on a double by SS Jose Mojica (2-4). C Nick McCoy (0-2) grounded out to second base to score Roller for a 1-0 Yankees lead.
Mojica moved to third base on the groundout. 2B Luis Parache (1-3) reached base on an error to score Mojica for a 2-0 advantage.
After Staten Island scored a run in the third inning, Parache led off the fourth inning for the Yankees and pulled a fastball off the right field foul pole for a solo home run and a 4-0 lead.
Connecticut (20-18) scored two runs in the sixth inning against Staten Island LHP Nik Turley (1-2). CF P.J. Polk (1-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to LF Ryan Enos (1-2).
3B Josh Ashenbrenner (1-4) singled to score Polk and cut the lead down to 4-1.
Enos moved to third base on the play and scored on a throwing error by Staten Island 2B Luis Panache to make it 4-2. Ashenbrenner then got caught between first and second base in a run down when Panache threw the ball away from first base. Enos trotted in from third base to cut the lead in half.
2B Alexander Nunez (1-4) grounded out to move Ashenbrenner to third base and 1B James Robbins (0-4) followed with an RBI groundout to score Ashenbrenner and make it 4-3.
The Yankees scored two runs in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 6-4 on a two-run double by 2B Casey Stevenson (1-5).
Mendoza started the game and took the loss. He went six innings and allowed six runs on eight hits for the Tigers.
The Tigers and Yankees finish their series on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. RHP Patrick Lawson (0-0, 3.22) gets the start for Connecticut against RHP Mike Gipson (2-0, 3.38) for Staten Island. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and online at milb.com.
