Penn FC News Release
Can the Isles seek their fourth win in a row? Saturday, July 17, the Harrisburg City Islanders (4-6-4, 16 points) travel to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (3-4-5, 14 points) at Chartiers Valley High School. Harrisburg continues to climb the rankings and now sits in the number four slot just above the Riverhounds and the Real Maryland Monarchs. Now the Isles have Pittsburgh in sight.
The previous match between the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Skyline (June 11) and proved to be a physical battle. Each team tallied 11 fouls. A yellow card was given to Pittsburgh's Matt Tuttle, while Harrisburg received four yellow cards. Travis Mackenzie notched the only goal for the Riverhounds while Philadelphia Union loan player Nick Zimmerman evened the score for the Isles to tie it 1-1. It's no doubt the upcoming game could be just as physical as both teams battle for better positions in the standings.
Harrisburg is coming off a 3-2 victory over the Real Maryland Monarchs this past weekend at Skyline. Goals by Anthony Calvano, Tyler Ruthven, and Jason Hotchkin put the Isles up 3-0 and they hung on to win 3-2 in spite of a late offensive push by Real Maryland.
Pittsburgh on the other hand dropped their match against the Charlotte Eagles on Friday, July 2. The Riverhounds won two games before falling to the Eagles 2-1. Adam Gazda got the goal for Pittsburgh in the 90th minute, too late to rally to a tie or a win.
The Isles hope to keep their success rolling and hand the Riverhounds their second loss in a row.
Geoff Bloes was named USL Second Division (USL-2) Player of the Week. Bloes lead the streaking Islanders to a two-win week, scoring a goal and two assists in victories over Real Maryland. Harrisburg also had defenders Jeritt Thayer and Anthony Calvano named to the USL-2 Team of the Week.
Then Harrisburg will travel to face DC United of the MLS in the quarterfinals of US Open Cup play on Wednesday, July 21, at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD at 7:30pm. Since the Charleston Battery fell to Columbus Crew of MLS 3-0, Harrisburg is the only USL-Division 2 team left in the US Open Cup. This match follows the Islanders heart-pounding win over the New York Red Bulls of MLS 1-0 at Skyline and Harrisburg hopes to take down another MLS team in the quest for a championship. There are $15 discount tickets on sale for advance purchase through D.C. United. A live broadcast on WMSS 91.1 radio and internet (www.wmssfm.com) will help bring the game's action to soccer fans everywhere!
The Islanders are also proud to announce an exhibition game against Major League Soccer affiliate the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday, July 27 at Skyline Sports Complex. City Islanders Academy Teams Weekend Update
Congratulations City Islanders Academy teams!
This past weekend the CIA teams participated in various tournaments in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. All the teams had opportunities to boost their skills in heavily-competitive matches throughout the process.
The girl's teams traveled to the Central Jersey Invitational in New Jersey for their tournament play. The U9 girls proved to be a force in their age bracket as they took down Brick Fury 1-0 to claim the championship. Then in a final that had the U10 girls White and U10 girls Navy teams facing each other, the White came out on top to gain the championship 1-0. The U11 girls fought hard and gained a win, a loss, and a tie taking them out of the semi-finals push. Additionally, the U12 girls advanced to the championship final by defeating TSF in penalty kicks. In the championship game the girls fell short to DTS Ajax. During three aggressive matches, the U13 girls lost twice and notched a win throughout their tournament run. Also, the U14 girls fought into the semi-finals before they were defeated by the HMMS XTREME (PAE) 2-0. Overall the City Islanders Academy tied for 3rd place in the MAPS Academy Cup!
The boy's teams also found success in their tournament this weekend. The U10 boys were crowned champions in the Mid Atlantic Cup after blanking the FC Revolution 8-1 in Lancaster, PA. The eight goals were part of 35 total goals scored throughout the tournament. The rest of the boy's squads also hit the road and traveled to New Jersey to play in the U.S. Club Regional tournament. The U12 boys claimed the championship after tying the South Jersey Barons 2-2 and by default secured the crown by goal differential; the team came from behind and evened the score to make sure the championship was won. Then, after an intense schedule, the U13 boys lost twice but played hard to gain a victory against some difficult competition. Also, the U15 boys won against the Lehigh Valley United and now will travel to play in the highest level tournament at Virginia Beach to participate in the U.S. Club National Cup.
