Kenai River Brown Bears News Release
In 2008-09 Brown Bear Jared Beers anchored the blue line for Kenai River's defensive corps. Now, after one season playing for the USHL's Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, he will realize another dream, playing NCAA Division I hockey for the prestigious Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. "Jared epitomized the type of player our program strives to recruit and develop. He is a true student-athlete, and we are very proud to have called him one of our own."
Another former Brown Bear teammate who has committed to play DI hockey is Andrej Sustr, from the Czech Republic, who will play at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. "Andrej is the prototype defenseman for the next level. At 6'6" he is a remarkably fast and agile skater, with a tremendous reach".
"Both Beers and Sustr were class acts, and it will be fun to watch our former products compete at the highest level of college hockey".
The Brown Bears recently announced that six members off this year's team have committed to college and professional hockey:
Johan Skinnars Norwegian Eliteserien Professional Jake Mussleman Air Force Academy NCAA Division I Braden Kinnebrew Castleton College NCAA Division III Brad Fusaro St. Mary's University NCAA Division III Ryan Townsend Gustavus Adolphus NCAA Division III Mike Martin St. Norbert's College NCAA Division III
"This is an exciting time for the Brown Bears. In only a few short years we have established ourselves as one of the premiere hockey organizations in the NAHL for developing and promoting student-athletes to the next level". Another notable advancement was in moving local Soldotna product, Branden Fisher, up to Tri Cities of the USHL. The Bears did not think twice about releasing Fisher at mid-season, sticking to the organization's goal of promoting it's players to the next level. Branden has a great future ahead of him and we are thrilled to see a local product flourish so quickly. He is without a doubt an elite prospect and is already being pursued by a number of top universities".
