Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES, LA (May 30, 2010) - Thanks from an unexpected rushing offense, the Louisiana Swashbucklers (4-4) of the Southern Indoor Football League defeated the Columbus Lions (5-2) 51-31 to extend their consecutive home winning streak to 32 games.

Featuring a rushing offense that rolled out 146 yards, the Bucs ate up drive after drive on the Lions defense scoring on 8 of their 9 possessions. Much of the success on the ground came as a surprise to Columbus considering the greater part of Louisiana's offensive success this season had come via the air.

After Louisiana controlled most the first three quarters, Columbus would get within five after quarterback Chris McCoy scored on a five-yard draw followed by a Trey Crum 31-yard field goal. What ensued in those final ten minutes was two methodical Swashbucklers touchdown drives from receiver Sammy Knight and Phillip O'Neal.

What minimized the Lions defense the most was the inability to stop the Bucs on third down situations. The Swashbucklers offense featured a balanced attack attempting 24 rushes and 24 passes tacking on 274 yards of total offense while also converting 60% of third down conversions.

"They had a great game plan of running the ball on first down offsetting our front five," says Columbus Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson. "In a pass happy league its not too often you see a club run for 100 yards but it is something that will motivate our defense and give us something to work on the rest of the season."

Bucs quarterback Freddie Harrison was used on a lot of running plays using the read-option play numerous times along with making a couple of quick pitches to his receivers. But the main threat on the ground came from fullback Kendrick Perry who hit the century mark rushing for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Freddie Harrison didn't need to do much in the air only completing 10 of 23 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly, Harrison led a Bucs offense that didn't turn ball over once only came up empty on one drive. Louisiana kicker Blake Bercegeay had a huge night getting 14 points off three uno's, connecting 2 of 3 field goal attempts, and a perfect 6 for 6 on PAT attempts.

Quarterback Chris McCoy kept the Lions within striking distance for majority of the game with another stellar passing game completing 27 of 44 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Tirone Morris also had a huge night breaking the SIFL record for most receptions in a game with 16, the second time he has done so this season.

Louisiana pulls back to .500 and will get back on the road next weekend when they take on their "I-10" rivals in the Lafayette Wildcatters (3-4). Columbus will look to rebound when they return home to match-up against the first place Albany Panthers (6-1).

Both games will have playoff implications, so be sure to log on to www.southernifl.com to track all of next weekend's action.
