Quad City Mallards News Release
DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton's Jonathan Ornelas scored two goals and Mike Vaskivuo provided what proved to be the game winner in the third period as the host Gems hung on to defeat the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2 Saturday night.
Vaskivuo pounced on a loose puck in the slot at 13:19 of the third to double what had been a 2-1 Dayton lead. Vaskivuo's goal loomed even larger after the Mallards pulled back within one with just 1:37 left after pulling goaltender Kyle Jones and going the power play when Terry Harrison ripped a one timer home from the left wing circle. The Mallards, however, were unable to produce a late equalizer after pulling Jones again.
The Gems had first taken the lead in the final minute of the first period when Ornelas snapped a 1-1 tie with a wraparound. Ornelas's tip in had evened the score just past the midway point of the first after the Mallards jumped in front when Obi Aduba buried a rebound just 37 seconds into the game.
The Mallards came up just short despite the efforts of Jones, who established a league season high by making 52 saves on the night.
