Mississippi Surge News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Surge grabbed a hold of first place in the SPHL with a 3-2 overtime win over the Louisiana Ice Gators at Blackham Coliseum on Friday night, passing the Huntsville Havoc, who fell 6-5 on the road at Fayetteville.
Tim Velemirovich got Mississippi out to a 1-0 lead when he hammered home Chris Greene's rebound on the power play at 10:37 of the first period.
Louisiana tied the game at one-apiece when Paul D'Agostino beat Ryan Senft on the blocker side with a shot from the top of the right circle at the 5:32 mark of the second period. The Surge regained a one-goal lead when, with Mississippi on the power play, Steve Weidlich's shot from the left point deflected off of an Ice Gator's skate and past goaltender A.J. Bucchino for his fourth goal of the season and a 2-1 Surge lead at 11:30 of the second.
Mike Ruberto tied the game at two when he deflected a shot by Nick Pernula past Surge starter Ryan Senft at the 3:10 mark of the third.
Senft left the game 4:24 into the third period, when he appeared to suffer a lower-body injury on a routine play. He was replaced by Zaniboni, who made 10 saves to keep the game even heading into overtime.
Just 73 seconds into overtime, Mike Richard tapped home the rebound of Jack Wolgemuth's shot from the right circle to give the Surge the win and sole possession of first place in the SPHL.
Ryan Senft made 25 saves for the Surge, earning no decision, while Zaniboni made nine saves to earn a win. Mississippi went 2-for-7 on the power play.
