
Bears Announce 2010 Coaching Staff

(Newark, N.J., Feb. 8, 2010) - The Newark Bears today announced that Manager Tim Raines will return to Newark for his second season and lead the 2010 Bears. Ron Karkovice, who served as hitting coach under Raines in 2009, will once again join Raines on the Bears' bench.
"We are very excited to welcome Tim and Ron back for the 2010 season," said General Manager R.C. Reuteman. "The team had a solid year last season, including an exciting 2nd Half Freedom Division Championship, and we look forward to more thrilling moments this season."
Raines, a former switch-hitting outfielder, played for six Major League teams from 1979 to 2002. He is regarded as one of baseball's all-time great leadoff hitters and base stealers. In his 23-year career, Raines hit.294 with 170 home runs, 980 RBI, 1,571 runs, 2,605 hits, 808 stolen bases, 430 doubles, 113 triples and an on-base percentage of.385. He was a seven-time All Star, won one batting title and led the league in stolen bases three times and runs scored twice. Raines previous coaching experience includes serving as hitting coach for the Harrisburg Senators (AA-Nationals) and as first base coach for the 2005 World Series Champion Chicago White Sox.
Karkovice played 12 major league seasons at catcher for the Chicago White Sox. A New Jersey native, the former first round draft choice previously served as a minor league manger in the Kansas City Royals organization.
