Mississippi Surge News Release
BILOXI, MS -- Bill Zaniboni made 25 saves and Matthew Larke scored the games' only goal as the Mississippi Surge shutout the Pensacola Ice Flyers by the score of 1-0 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Thursday night.
After generating several chances on the power play in the scoreless first period, Mississippi gained a man-advantage in the second period when Pensacola's Matt Whitehead was whistled for hooking at 10:49. Bill Zaniboni made a spectacular save on a shorthand breakaway by Pensacola's Chris Rebernik just over a minute later, keeping the game scoreless as Mississippi failed to score on the power play, and the game remained scoreless after the balance of the second period.
Matthew Larke provided the only offense that the Surge would need, taking a long feed from Jeff Bieber and breaking in alone on Pensacola's Ryan Scott and tucking the puck behind him at the 5:33 mark of the third frame. The Surge killed off both of Pensacola's power plays late in the third period to hold on to the 1-0 lead.
Bill Zaniboni made 25 saves for the Surge to earn a win and a shutout, and the Surge were 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Surge returns home on Saturday, January 30 when they face off against the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:30 p.m. The first 1,500 fans 14 & under on January 30 will receive a free Surge youth jersey courtesy of Keesler Federal Credit Union and CableOne!
