Published on January 18, 2010 under NBA G League (G League) News Release

NEW YORK, Jan. 18, 2009-- The NBA D-League, its teams, and players today tipped off the 2010 NBA D-League Cares Week of Service. NBA D-League teams will host a variety of hands-on service events through Jan. 24 in a collaborative effort to give back to children, families, and the community and to increase fan awareness about the importance of service.

The NBA D-League Cares Week of Service tips off on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service and aligns with President Obama's recent launch of the United We Serve initiative ( www.serve.gov). United We Serve seeks to expand the impact of volunteer work in existing organizations and encourage individuals to make a difference in their communities. Fans can find out about volunteer opportunities and learn more about the NBA's community partners by going to www.nba.com/nbacares.

Throughout the week, NBA D-League teams will join with community members and partners in an effort to support health, education, and environmental awareness programs through several projects including:

The Maine Red Claws will attend the NAACP's MLK Breakfast on Monday, Jan.18 and announce their partnership with the NAACP's Youth Advisory Council to refurbish three Portland Housing Authorities' study centers.

The Austin Toros will partner with the Souper Bowl of Caring to mobilize local schools and business to collect money or food on or near Super Bowl Weekend.

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Pepper's at Uptown and Foot Solutions are planning a shoe drive on Wednesday, Jan. 20 benefiting a Haiti relief fund. The RGV Vipers Snake Charmers and mascots will be on-site accepting the donations of close-toed, flat shoes.
