Three Third Period Goals By Gators Bite Surge

BILOXI, MS - Despite a hat-trick from Matt Zultek and a 4-for-10 effort on the power play, the Mississippi Surge fell by the score of 7-6 to the Louisiana IceGators at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, Louisiana on Friday night.

Louisiana got on the board early int eh first period Nick Pernula drove to the net and tapped home a centering pass from Cam Lilley at 3:57. Matt Zultek drew the Surge even with a power-play goal from the top of the slot at 6:47, and 24 seconds later, Tim Velemirovich gave the Surge the lead with a power-play goal on a cantering pass from Chris Ferazzoli.

Louisiana grabbed two quick power-play goals from Nicholas Bydal and Scooter Smith early in the second, but the Surge answered back quickly. Tom Boudreau hammered a pass from Ferazzoli under Louisiana netminder Jamie Gilbert's pads at 7:02, and 22 seconds later Matt Zultek scored from a sharp angle for his second power-play marker of the night. Tim Velemirovich potted his second of the night at 11:34, roofing his own rebound over Gilbert for a 5-3 Mississippi lead. Louisiana again drew within one when Josh Bonar poked home a loose puck at 13:54 of the second frame.

Zultek completed his hat trick at 5:50 of the third period, rifling a shot from the left wing through traffic past Gilbert to give the Surge a 6-4 lead, but the rest of the final frame was all IceGators. Mike Omicioli drew the Gators within one when his sharp-angle shot from the left wing beat Mississippi goalie Ryan Senft under the left arm at 6:23, and Louisiana evened the score when Josh Bonar's centering pass from behind the goal frame bounced past Senft at 10:29. Fifty seconds later, Paul McBrien's backhander on the power play gave Louisiana a 7-6 lead that they would hold on to for the win.

The Mississippi Surge have partnered with CableOne and the Salvation Army for a holiday canned food drive at the team's home game on December 12 against the Fayetteville FireAntz. Each fan that brings a canned food item to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum will receive $2 off the cost of a ticket to the game that evening. The Salvation Army will be on hand to collect the food and accept donations.
