MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Iron announced today that it has resigned wide receiver and Milwaukee native Antoine Burns and fullback/linebacker Tyre Young for the 2010 season. Both players contributed heavily to the success of the Iron in 2009 and return to bulk the Iron offense for next season.
Antoine Burns, WR, 6'0'', 210, Minnesota
A native of Milwaukee, Burns, 30, led the Iron in all purpose yards last season, tallying 1,425 yards on kickoff returns, 1,177 receiving yards and 16 field goal return yards, while returning a team-high five kick returns for touchdowns. His 2,631 all-purpose yards were seventh most in the af2 in 2009. Burns also led the team in scoring with 168 points and finished second on the team in receiving yards, receptions (96) and touchdowns (19).
Burns played parts of four seasons in the NFL, AFL and NFL Europe before playing his af2 rookie season in 2008 with the Green Bay Blizzard. As an undrafted free agent, Burns signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2003 and was later picked up by the Seattle Seahawks as part of their practice squad. In 2004, he was allocated to NFL Europe's Amsterdam Admirals but after being injured in his first game signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad where he spent the rest of 2004 and all of 2005. In 2006, Burns signed with the AFL's Los Angeles Avengers where he led the team with 124.5 all-purpose yards per game and set the Avengers single-season record for kickoff return yards with 984.
After attending Milwaukee's North Division High School, Burns went on to play football at Rochester Community College (MN) where he was named a Junior College All-American before earning a scholarship with the University of Minnesota where he was an All-Big 10 Conference selection as a junior and senior for the Gophers.
Tyre Young, FB/LB, 6'0'', 310, Indiana University - Pennsylvania
Young, 26, returns to the Iron after a successful 2009 campaign as team's leading rusher. Young led the Iron in rushing yards (224), rush attempts (59), rushing touchdowns (8) and average yards per carry (3.8). In addition, he collected 58 yards and a touchdown receiving while making 12 tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack as a linebacker on defense.
"I'm very excited about playing for Milwaukee again. This is the same type of system they ran when I was with Green Bay and it's a system that I can be very successful in," said Young about returning to the Iron.
Having played four seasons in af2, Young brings back size, athleticism and depth to the Iron running game and experience on defense. After beginning his career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers in 2006, Young played two seasons with the Green Bay Blizzard. In just seven games with the Blizzard in 2008, Young led the team with 241 rushing yards and added eight touchdowns.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Young attended the University of Pittsburgh and played in the Big East Conference as a nose tackle for two seasons and in 2001 returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Tangerine Bowl. In 2002, he broke his ankle in the second game of the season and transferred to Indiana University - Pennsylvania where he finished his college career.
