Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL - Brandon Marino scored the third period game winner, Juris Stals provided one goal and two assists and Kyle Jones made 31 saves as the host Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, Saturday picked up their second straight win, extended their regulation unbeaten streak to four games and moved out of last place in the IHL standings by defeating the Bloomington PrairieThunder 5-3.
Marino's tip-in snapped a 3-3 tie at 7:35 of the third period. The Mallards put the game away when Ryan Fultz swooped across the goalmouth and buried a Justin White feed to make it 5-3 with 1:48 left in the third.
Fultz's was the Mallards' third unanswered goal. That run started with Quad City on the power play when Stals spun and swept the puck home from the doorstep to erase a 3-2 Bloomington lead at 15:48 of the second. Robin Gomez had given the PrairieThunder its first lead of the night by depositing a rebound in the back of the net and breaking a 2-2 deadlock at 5:55 of the second period.
The Mallards twice grabbed the lead in the first period only for Bloomington to rebound with a tying goal on both occasions. Patrick Levesque's drive broke in off Bloomington goaltender Andrew Martin (22 saves) for the game's opening goal just over five minutes into the game. Bloomington was on the power play when Jesse Dudas evened the score from close range at the seven minute mark of the first.
The Mallards were in the midst of a two-man advantage when Chris Lipsett pounced on a rebound to put Quad City up 2-1 at 12:10. Just when it seemed the Flock might take the one goal lead into the first intermission, Jon Booras- who would finish the night with three points- snapped another equalizer in off the post from the left wing circle with a mere 24 seconds left in the period.
The first period was Jones's busiest- he made 13 saves in the opening 20 minutes. The Mallards goaltender finished strong as well, turning aside all 11 shots he faced in the third period.
With the win the Mallards jumped past the idle Flint Generals- on whom the Mallards have four games in hand- and into sixth place in the IHL. The Mallards have now earned at least one point in each of their last five home games.
The Mallards hit the road next Friday night to take on the Komets in Fort Wayne and one night later will battle the Lumberjacks in Muskegon. The Flock is next in action on home ice on Friday, December 11 at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for that game will receive free Mallards stadium scarves.
