BILOXI, MS - Despite a full sixty-minute effort and a late power play in the third period, the Mississippi Surge fell 5-4 to the Knoxville Ice Bears in a back-and-forth game at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Thursday evening.
Chris Brannen got Knoxville out to a 1-0 lead just 69 seconds intot he first period when Frank Furdero won the faceoff back to him and Brannen let a slap shot go that eluded Mississippi netminder Ryan Senft on the glove side. The Surge evened the score at one-apiece at 2:37 when Stephen Schofield fired a meek wrister that trickled through the pads of Knoxville's Andrew Gallant.
Just 30 seconds into the second period, Kevin Swider scored his first of the evening, giving Knoxville a 2-1 lead. Mississippi would answer back quickly when Chris Ferazzoli slid a pass over to Tim Velemirovich that he tapped in for his fourth goal of the season at 1:07. Mississippi grabbed a 3-2 lead at the 3:21 mark of the second frame when Ferazzoli found Tom Boudreau alone in the low slot and Boudreau rifled a shot over Gallant's glove.
Knoxville batted back in the third when Kevin Swider banked a shot from behind the goal line off of Ryan Senft's back and into the net to tie the game at three at 10:23 of the third period. Just 34 seconds later, Kevin Harris made an end-to-end rush and put Knoxville ahead when he beat Senft over the glove from point-blank range as he drove to the net. BJ Pelkey's goal at 18:02 sent the Surge fans towards the exits, but just 16 seconds later Mike Richard drew Mississippi within one. With the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, the Surge went on the power play when Tom Boudreau was high-sticked by Knoxville's Grant Farrell. Despite the advantage, the Surge failed to even the score as time wound down.
Ryan Senft made 32 saves to earn a loss and the Surge were 1-for-8 on the power play.
