Surge skin Gators 4-2 to win home opener

BILOXI, MS - Tim Velemirovich scored two goals and Matt Zultek chipped in the game-winner on the power play as the Mississippi Surge downed the Louisiana Ice Gators 4-2 on Saturday night.

Despite posting 27 shots on goal in the first period, Mississippi was unable to beat Louisiana netminder A.J. Bucchino until 3:46 of the second period, when Tim Velemirovich scored his first goal of the game, walking across the slot and firing over Bucchino's blocker for a 1-0 lead. Mississippi made it 2-0 when Mike Richard hammered home a one-timer on a pass from Chris Ferazzoli at 12:17.

Louisiana battled back, picking up a goal from Mike Omicioli at 14:04 of the second period, and drawing even after Frank Littlejohn on a seven-minute power play after Surge captain Steve Weidlich was assessed a major for fighting and a instigation minor.

Less than two minutes later, Matt Zultek scored his second power-play goal of the young season, blasting home a feed from Chris Greene at 9:11 of the third. Velemirovich would add an insurance goal later in the third period as the Surge continued to pound shots at the Louisiana net.

John Hallas made 15 saves to earn his first win in a Surge jersey.
