Cannons Aim to Clinch Playoff Spot

July 22, 2009 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Boston Cannons

BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - The Boston Cannons (6-4) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), will travel to Ontario, Canada to take on the Toronto Nationals (5-5) at BMO Field on Thursday, July 23 at 7:30 PM. With a win, the Cannons will clinch a spot in the 2009 MLL Championship Weekend in Annapolis, Maryland on August 22-23.

CANNONS VS. TORONTO IN 2009: The Cannons defeated the Toronto Nationals, 19-15, at Harvard Stadium on June 25. Attackman Sean Morris, a native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, earned the game's Bud Light MVP award for his seven-point effort, including four goals and three assists. Cannons goalie Mike Levin had a stellar game, making 18 saves on the 32 shots he faced to earn his fourth win of the season and the MLL's Defensive Player of the Week honor.

CANNONS' LAST GAME (JULY 18 VS. CHICAGO): The Cannons rebounded from a season sweep at the hands of the Long Island Lizards to notch a sweep of their own, beating the Chicago Machine for the third time this season, 17-10, in front of 8,074 fans at Harvard Stadium. Bud Light MVP attackman Ryan Boyle led the way with eight points (2G, 6A). He got help from attackmen Matt Alrich and Sean Morris, as well as midfielder Paul Rabil, each of whom scored three goals. In his first start since week two, Kip Turner turned aside 15 of 25 shots to earn his first victory of the season.

TORONTO'S LAST GAME (JULY 18 AT LONG ISLAND): The Toronto Nationals earned their fifth win of the season, and climbed back to .500, with a resounding 19-9 victory over the Long Island Lizards in front of 7,621 fans at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium. Midfielder Joe Walters and attackman Jeff Zywicki paced the Nationals with six points apiece. Their efforts helped put an end to a dangerous four- game losing streak that the Nationals had been suffering.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: With his five-point performance against the Chicago Machine on July 18, midfielder Paul Rabil continued his control of the Cannons and MLL scoring leads with 41 points (25G, 5 2ptG, 11A)...In the five games that midfielder Matt Poskay, the 2008 Cannons MVP, has been in the lineup this season, the Cannons have a perfect 5-0 record... With 38 points on the season, attackman Sean Morris is now just one point away from tying his career high for points in one season...This match-up will pit two of the best face-off men in the game against each other. Chris Eck, of the Boston Cannons, is second in the league with 163 face-off wins, a 55.4 percent success rate, and for Toronto, Geoff Snider has 157 face-off wins (3rd in the league) and a 49.1 percent success rate (5th in the league)...Assuming he makes an appearance in tomorrow night's game, goalie Mike Levin will play in his 50th game in Major League Lacrosse, making him just the fifth goalie in MLL history to reach that milestone...With their 17-10 win over the Chicago Machine on July 18, the Cannons notched win number 60 for the team...Each of the Cannons' four losses this season have been decided by one goal, and three of them were to the Long Island Lizards.
