Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks announced on Tuesday that they have signed two-time MJHL All-Star Blair Hawes for the 2009-10 season. Hawes spent the last four seasons playing in his hometown for the Selkirk Steelers (MJHL), where he helped lead them to both the 2007 Anavet and Turnbull Cup Championships.
Hawes, who will turn 21 on Wednesday, put up 159 points (48-111=159) in 171 career games with the Steelers, as well as piling up 289 PIM's. Hawes was named an All-Star in each of the last two seasons in the MJHL.
"Blair knows exactly what it takes to win a championship, and those are the kinds of players that we are trying to bring here," said Bucks President/General Manager and Head Coach Terry Ruskowski. "Blair put up solid numbers, and we think that will translate to success here in Laredo."
Last season Hawes, 6'0, 200 pounds, had 63 points (17-46=63) in 62 games for the Steelers, to go along with 108 PIM's earning him his second straight All-Star nod. Hawes, who had three game-winning goals in 08-09, was effective on the power-play last season, as he scored seven power-play goals and handed out 19 power-play assists. Hawes had four assists on November 7th of last year in the Steelers 6-3 win over Waywayseecappo.
"We are looking forward to seeing Blair during training camp to see what he can bring to the team this season," Ruskowski said.
In 2007-08 Hawes notched career highs in goals (21), assists (47), and points (68), to go along with 106 PIM's to earn his first All-Star game berth.
Hawes played in 45 games during the Steelers 2006-07 Championship season, putting up 27 points (10-17=27).
Hawes is the seventh Buck signed this offseason, including the fourth rookie.
