Cannons Travel to Long Island Thursday

BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, July 8, 2009 - The Boston Cannons (5-3) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), fresh off a huge 17-16 victory over the first-place Denver Outlaws on July 4, will look for their fifth consecutive win when they face-off against the Long Island Lizards (4-3) at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium on Thursday, July 9 at 7:00 PM.

CANNONS VS. LONG ISLAND IN 2009: The Cannons came up short in their 2009 season-opening game against the Long Island Lizards, by a score of 9-8, at Harvard Stadium on May 16. Attackman Seth Goldberg netted the game-winning goal for the Lizards, earning Bud Light MVP honors in a game that ended as tied for the second-lowest scoring game in MLL's nine year history. Midfielder Brett Garber led the Cannons with three goals, including one two-point goal and two power-play tallies. In the second match-up between the two teams this season, the Cannons were defeated by a score of 14-13, in a heartbreaking overtime loss at Shuart Stadium on Friday, June 5. The game marked the fourth consecutive match-up between the two teams that has been decided by just one goal. Lizards midfielder Chris Fiore earned the Bud Light MVP after netting four goals in the game, including the game-winner in overtime. Attackman Sean Morris led the Cannons in scoring with four goals and two assists.

CANNONS' LAST GAME (JULY 4 AT DENVER): The Cannons earned their fourth consecutive win as they defeated the first place Denver Outlaws, breaking their six-game winning streak by a score of 17-16, in front of a record 21,952 fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Attackman Ryan Boyle earned the Bud Light MVP for his five-point performance (3G, 2A) in the Independence Day thriller. With the win, the Cannons improved their record to 5-3 this season to move into second place in the league standings.

LONG ISLAND'S LAST GAME (JULY 4 AT WASHINGTON): The Long Island Lizards fell to the Washington Bayhawks for the second time this season, by a score of 14-7, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Bayhawks goalie Chris Garrity made 13 saves, allowing just seven goals in the game to earn the Bud Light MVP. With the loss, the Lizards' record dropped to 4-3, moving them down into third place in the league standings.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Cannons' current four-game winning streak, their longest since the 2006 season, has shot them to within one game of first place...Over the last four games, the Cannons have averaged 19.25 goals per game while only allowing an average of 12.75 goals against...The last four games between the Cannons and Long Island have been decided by just one goal...Attackman Sean Morris' 34 overall points lead the Cannons heading into this weekend, and he is the most balanced attackman with 17 goals and 17 assists...Midfielder Justin Smith tallied two goals in his Cannons debut against the Denver Outlaws on July 4, including the game-winner with just 1:29 left in the fourth quarter...With their next win, the Cannons will notch win number 60 for the team...Each of the Cannons' three losses this season have been decided by one goal.
