Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks announced Friday that they have signed rookie forward Matt McKeown for the 2009-10 season. McKeown spent the last three seasons playing college hockey for Fredonia State University (NCAA D-III). McKeown is the first player signed by the Bucks this offseason.
In 72 career collegiate games the Niagra Falls, Ontario native put up 50 points (21-29=50), to go along with 103 penalty minutes.
"We are happy to sign Matt for the upcoming season, he's a big, tough guy and that's what we want", said Bucks President/General Manager and Head Coach Terry Ruskowski. "We can't wait to see him on the ice."
The 24-year-old McKeown (pronounced Mick-COWN) helped lead the Blue Devils to the 2007 SUNYAC Championship, putting up a career high 20 points (11-9=20) in 22 games, including scoring a goal in the conference title game.
McKeown was named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Week in October 2006, when he notched seven points in two games, including his first college hat trick.
McKeown, 6'0'', 195 pounds, scored 11 points (3-8=11) last season for Fredonia.
An injury prior to his freshman year forced McKeown to transfer to Fredonia from NCAA Powerhouse Cornell.
McKeown played five junior seasons for three different teams, putting up a combined 190 points in 293 games for Port Colbourne (GHJHL), Burlington (OPJHL), and Niagra Falls (GHJHL).
In two seasons with Niagra Falls McKeown piled up 102 points (57-45=102) in 119 games, to go along with 184 PIM's.
The Bucks will start their eighth season in the Gateway City in October, and will host the 2010 CHL All-Star game in January.
