
Huntsville takes four of five from Jaxx with 5-2 win on Monday

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. (MAY 24, 2009) - The first place Huntsville Stars (21-19) beat the Diamond Jaxx (17-26) on Memorial Day by the score 5-2. The Jaxx drop four out of five in the series and are now five and a half games back of the Stars in the Northern Division.
Huntsville struck first Monday afternoon as Taylor Green picked up an RBI groundout scoring Adam Stern from third. Stern led the bottom of the first off with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball. The Stars took a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
Justin Souza (3-3) walked two and allowed a single bringing Shane Justis to the plate in the second inning. Justis was hit by a pitch scoring Freddy Parejo to give Huntsville a 2-0 lead.
Justin Souza lasted just three innings before being relieved by Patrick Ryan. Souza walked three and hit two batters in his outing. Souza had won the last two outings and three of his last four. Adam Stern scored on a wild pitch by Ryan in the fourth. Stern led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on an error by Jaxx right fielder, Brent Johnson. Stern stole third and scored on a wild pitch by Ryan.
Huntsville scored two runs in the fifth inning off of left-hander Nick Hill. Kevin Mellilo hit his second homerun of the series giving Huntsville a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Freddy Parejo ripped a double down the left field line. Next batter, Johnny Raburn doubled down the same left field line scoring Parejo and giving the Stars a 5-0 lead after five innings.
Stars' starting pitcher, David Welch (3-3) walked Oswaldo Navarro and Mel Stocker began the Diamond Jaxx sixth inning. Welch was relieved in the inning by Josh Wahpepah. After a wild pitch by Wahpepah, Greg Halman hit a single to left scoring Navarro and Stocker. The Jaxx cut the Stars lead to 5-2 after six.
David Welch got the win for Huntsville. He went five innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four and walking two. Omar Aguilar (S, 3) tossed a scoreless ninth picking up the save.
The Jaxx return home to begin a series with the Chattanooga Lookouts Tuesday night at 7:05. RHP Steve Bray (0-3, 4.87) starts for the Diamond Jaxx on Tuesday. The Lookouts counter with RHP Tim Corcaran (1-3, 5.97). It is Two-for-Tuesday at the ballpark on Tuesday night. Buy one get one free on 16oz soft drinks and draft beer, as well as ANY ticket.
