Spitfires Capture Memorial Cup

Rimouski, QC - The Windsor Spitfires captured the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup after defeating the Kelowna Rockets 4-1 in the Championship game on Sunday, May 24th, in Rimouski, QC.

Adam Henrique notched a goal and an assist as the Spitfires scored on their first three shots in the opening period en route to the franchise's first Memorial Cup Championship.

Dale Mitchell, Rob Kwiet and Ryan Ellis also scored for the Spitfires, who outshot the WHL Champion Rockets 28-22 in the contest, while Mark Cundari chipped in two assists.

Colin Long scored the only goal for the Rockets, who had earned the automatic berth in the Championship game after posting the best record in the round robin portion of the tournament.

Andrew Engelage made 21 saves to backstop the Spitfires to the victory. Rookie netminder Adam Brown made 24 saves in the loss for the Rockets after replacing starter Mark Guggenberger, who allowed three goals on three shots in the first 7:11 of the contest.

17-year-old forward Taylor Hall of the Spitfires was named the tournament MVP, earning the Stafford Smythe trophy.

The Spitfires become the first team in Memorial Cup history to open the tournament with two straight losses, win the tiebreaker and then go on to win the Cup.

The 2010 Memorial Cup will be played at Brandon's Keystone Centre and is scheduled for May 14-23rd.
