SPHL expansion discussions scheduled in Pensacola

Jim Combs, Commissioner of the Southern Professional Hockey League's Commissioner announced tonight that the Southern Professional Hockey League's Board of Governors has authorized him and select members of the Board to enter into discussions with potential investors, key government officials, local fans and business leaders in Pensacola, Florida relative to award of a franchise for the 2009-10 SPHL season. Combs confirmed that SPHL representatives will be in Pensacola next week for a series of scheduled discussions.

Combs stated that "the Board of Governors is hopeful about the potential that the SPHL could bring professional hockey back to Pensacola. The league has been actively responding to local fans, business leaders, government officials and potential investors about the potential of an SPHL expansion team that would start play next season. While much work remains to iron out the details, ensure a solid base of ownership and community support the Board is committed to working with local Pensacola leaders and fans."

Additionally according to Combs the league is also considering other possible expansion locations as well as working on the relocation of the Twin City Cyclones. "It is still premature to provide more specific detail however, be assured it is the intention of our Board of Governors that the SPHL will expand where and when the right opportunities exist within our geographical footprint.
