American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
NASHUA, NH (22 Dec 08) - The Northeast recently faced blizzard conditions and downed power lines leaving hundreds of thousands without power, American Defenders Director of Player Development, Dan Duquette is hoping his most recent acquisition, talented right hander, Luis Valdez can do the same against Can-Am hitters at historic Holman Stadium this summer.
Duquette was among those without electricity, but somehow found a way to get this deal done. Shortly after his power was restored late Monday he received word that all three teams were close to an agreement that would bring the best of the bunch to New Hampshire's newest baseball franchise. The off-season hot stove has been burning all winter, as the American Defenders of New Hampshire plan to announce a full slate of signings in addition to Valdez, as the newest member of the Defenders who are also the newest members of the 8-team Can-Am League.
Valdez, who finished near the top in all pitching categories last season was the center piece in a three-team swap involving the Defenders and the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League and the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League. In exchange for Valdez, Quebec acquires right handers Jarrett Stawarz and Cody Castle from the Defenders, while Florence acquires utility infielder Dorian Rojas from the Defenders.
Last year for Florence, Castle appeared in 31 games and posted a 1-3 record and 3.71 ERA with 31 strikeouts and 15 walks in 34 innings of work. Stawarz carried a 3-4 record with a 5.82 ERA over 85 innings in Nashua, while Rojas hit .243 with 17 hits in 70 at bats. He knocked in nine runs and finished the year with a .357 OBP. Pitching for the 58-36 Quebec Capitales in 2008, Valdez was 9-4 with a 2.49 ERA. In 105 innings of work over 19 games, Valdez recorded 67 strikeouts and 30 walks, while allowing just 29 earned runs. Opponents batted .240 against him. He is currently playing for Este Azucareros in the Dominican Republic, where through November 25 he had a 2-0 record and 3.38 ERA, with three strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings pitched.
