Published on November 14, 2008 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release
The Washington Capitals have signed former Indiana Ice defenseman John Carlson, one of their two first round picks from the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, to an entry-level contract. Carlson, chosen 27th overall in the June draft, signed a three-year contract. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Carlson spent the 2007-08 season with Indiana. He finished fifth on the team in scoring, with 12 goals and 43 points in 59 games. Carlson played in the 2008 USHL Prospects/All-Star Game and picked up one assist. He was the second highest scoring defenseman in the USHL a season ago, and was voted by league coaches onto the All-USHL Second Team as well as the USHL All-Rookie Team.
"We are certainly proud that our organization was able to help John develop his hockey skills with the Indiana Ice in the USHL. Being with the family last spring during the 2008 NHL Draft in Ottawa and watching John get drafted in the first round was a very proud moment for his entire family, along with the Indiana Ice organization," stated Ice C.E.O Paul Skjodt. "Not only was he a terrific hockey player, but a quality young man who we believe is going to have a long and successful NHL career. We look forward to seeing John in Washington next year and hope he takes advantage of the opportunity presented before him today."
Carlson, 18, is a 6-3, 210-pound native of Natick, Mass. He appeared in two pre-season games with the Capitals and recorded two assists.
"I had the good fortune of being at the NHL Draft in June and getting to see John Carlson called up to the stage in the first round," said Gino Gasparini, USHL executive vice president. "It's such an exciting time for these athletes. I'm happy I got to see one of our own get picked and get one step closer to realizing his dream."
