Shreveport, LA - After a tough 2008 season, the Shreveport Sports continued their overhaul today with the announcement of Craig Brasfield as vice president/general manager.Scott Berry, President of the Sports said, "This signals a change in the way we intend to operate and market our organization, but it reaffirms our continued commitment to the Shreveport/Bossier community. We think Craig is the right guy to re-energize our team both on and off the field."
Berry went on to say, "Craig brings an absolute wealth of experience and some dynamic new ideas to Shreveport. Craig was our number one choice to fill the position. He has been successful wherever he has been and in whatever capacity he has served and we expect he will have that same impact on our team, our organization and our community. "
A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Brasfield brings over 21 years of minor league baseball experience. He began his professional baseball career in 1985 with the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Lookouts, then the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, before moving up to General Manager of the Medicine Hat (Alberta, Canada) Blue Jays (Rookie League), and stints as Director of Food and Beverage for the Durham (N.C.) Bulls and Tidewater (Va.) Tides.
With the inception of independent baseball in the early 90's, Brasfield joined the Alexandria (LA) Aces of the Texas-Louisiana League in 1994. He guided the Aces until 2002, when he was named vice president/general manager of the Jackson Senators of the Central League. Brasfield joined the United League in 2006, serving as league president /executive general manager until October of this year.
"All the elements for success are here....committed ownership, a large population base, a beautiful ballpark, and a great minor league baseball tradition," Brasfield said. "Our goal is to put together a game plan that focuses on providing the Shreveport-Bossier community with top-notch affordable family entertainment, while trying to win the American Association league championship."
The Shreveport Sports are a member of the American Association of Professional Baseball. They will play a 48 game home schedule at Fair Grounds Field beginning May 19, 2009.
