Rochester Rhinos News Release

(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Rhinos announced today that Assistant Coach Steve Guppy will be leaving the club to become the Assistant Coach for the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer.

Guppy, a 39-year old native of Winchester, England joined the Rhinos in the spring of 2008 as a Player/Assistant Coach. In his short spell with the Rhinos, Guppy amassed over 1400 minutes of playing time and tallied one goal and one assist during the 2008 season. Prior to joining the Rhinos, Guppy enjoyed a storied career including stints in the English and Scottish Premier Leagues at Leicester, Newcastle and Celtic.

"Steve has been a very valuable asset in the short period he was with us," said Rhinos Head Coach Darren Tilley. "His influence was felt throughout the club and we wish him well as he moves on in his coaching career."

Guppy moves on to MLS where he will support long time friend and England native Gary Smith who succeeded Fernando Clavijo in mid-season. The Rapids narrowly missed the MLS playoffs last month after a 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake ended their hopes of post-season play.

"Steve brought a new level of professionalism to the Rhinos," said Rhinos President Matthew Ford. "Steve was able to influence our club on and off the field and he made us better. We'll miss his influence, but we wish him well in his new challenge."

Guppy will start his new role in January and relishes the opportunity to team up with an old friend and teammate.

"While I am excited for this new opportunity, I would like to thank the Rhinos and their fans for making me feel so welcome," commented Guppy. "I am pleased that my last competitive professional game was in a Rhinos shirt and I'd like to wish Darren, the players and the club the best for luck for the 2009 season."
