Barons' Beat Writer Honored by Southern League

Published on September 4, 2008 under Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Doug Segrest of the Birmingham News has been named its Sportswriter of the Year, as voted upon by the league's general managers and radio broadcasters.

It is the second such award in three years for Segrest, who also was recognized as the league's top sportswriter in 2006. A 15-year veteran of the Birmingham News, Segrest also has won the Herby Kerby Award for Alabama's top sports story twice.

Segrest's coverage of the Birmingham Barons in 2008 included the 13th annual Rickwood Classic at historic Rickwood Field on May 28. Less than two weeks after that game, the Barons clinched a first-half title in the South Division to mark the seventh time this decade that Segrest has covered a playoff team in the Southern League.

In addition to keeping readers informed of the day-to-day happenings of the Barons, Segrest has a knack for offering historical perspective. His piece on the 1964 Barons last year was recognized by the Alabama Sportswriters Association as a runner-up for Best Baseball Feature Without a Deadline.

A native of Montgomery who resides in Hoover, AL with his wife and children, Segrest also specializes in college athletics. Prior to joining the Birmingham News, Segrest preceded ESPN's Buster Olney in covering the Nashville Sounds for the Nashville Banner and once held the title of Tennessee's Sportswriter of the Year.

Segrest joins Mark McCarter of the Huntsville Times and Adam Rubin, whom he succeeded as beat writer for the Barons at the Birmingham News, as the only two-time winners of the league's sports writing award within the last decade.
