Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, a throwing error by Long Island Ducks' third baseman P.J. Rose allowed Ramon Nivar to score, giving the Newark Bears a 5-4 victory at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Friday night. With the win, the Bears snap the Ducks' nine-game hitting streak.
Nivar started the bottom of the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bobby Hill. Then, with one out, Ramon Castro hit the ball softly towards Rose playing third, who fielded the ball cleanly but threw it wide of first base, allowing Nivar to score.
Going into the ninth with a 4-3 Bears lead, Rose blasted his second home run of the game, a solo shot, to tie the score and set up the extra inning outcome.
After Bears starter Mike Bumstead surrendered a two-run homer in the first inning, he buckled down, rendering the Ducks scoreless until the seventh inning, when a solo shot by Ray Navarrete tied the game at 3-3. Bumstead ended up pitching eight innings and allowing three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out six, but earned a no-decision. Bumstead remains tied for the single-season franchise record with 13 wins.
Trailing 2-0 early on, the Bears tied the game in the fourth inning on back-to-back solo home runs by Castro and Keith Reed. Reed now leads the team with 20 home runs on the season, and he finished the game 2-4 with a double, the home run. Castro went 3-5 with double, home run, and the game winning hit.
Bears reliever Andy Shibilo (1-1) earned his first win, pitching the final two innings. Reliever Vic Darensbourg (4-3) picked up the loss.
The Bears continue their series against the Ducks with a 3:05 game tomorrow, featuring a pitching matchup between Roberto Giron (0-2) and Jose Paniagua (3-0). The Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St. train station, and minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
