Honouring Canadian Football Greatness

Published on August 22, 2008 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Hamilton, ON - (August 22, 2008) - With one month to go until Canadian Football Hall Of Fame Weekend September 18-20, the celebration of the star studded class of 2008 is shaping up as one popular party.

"The Golf Tournament on September 18th has been sold out for days, and tickets to the Gala Dinner on September 20th are going fast," says Mark DeNobile, the Hall's executive-director.

"The excitement surrounding the weekend is a testament to the quality of the people being inducted into the hall this year. There's a lot of talk that this may be the most exciting class we've ever inducted, and given our game's proud history, that's quite a statement."

Players John Bonk, Mike "Pinball" Clemons, Doug Flutie, and Mike Pringle as well as Builder Tom Shepherd will be officially inducted during the Saturday night dinner at the Hamilton Convention Centre.

Dinner tickets are still available, at a cost of $125 per person or $1250 per table. The evening begins with a reception at 5:30, followed by dinner at 6:30. All proceeds are invested in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame which, as a charitable organization, makes tax receipts available to all attendees.

Current Hall of Famers planning to attend include Paul Bennett, Less Browne, Jerry "Soupy" Campbell, John Helton, Ellison Kelly, Angelo Mosca, Peter Dalla Riva, Don Sutherin and Ben Zambiasi.

The weekend also showcases the Friday night Canadian Football League game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Ivor Wynne Stadium, where this year's inductees will be honoured at half-time.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate what's great about Canadian football, the excitement it generates on the field, and the positive difference it makes in our communities," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"This is an outstanding class and I know Mark DeNobile and his team at the Hall of Fame are working incredibly hard to ensure the weekend is worthy of the honourees, and a great time is had by all."

The 2008 inductees will join the 229 existing Hall of Fame members already included in the Hall's Zone of Champions, which features sculpted busts of each member of the hall.

Located in Hamilton, Ontario since 1962, and in its current location next to Hamilton City Hall since 1972, the Hall is home to more than 30,000 Canadian football artifacts, ranging from equipment and trophies to photos and videos.

It's open to the public year round, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 to 4:30, except on statutory holidays and long weekends.
