Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Schaumburg, IL - Second verse, same as the first. The Schaumburg Flyers took a tight game into the top of the ninth against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Saturday evening. With the score tied at two, Gary put a sacrifice fly into right field to score a run, and Schaumburg could do nothing to even the score in their half of the inning. That made the final 3-2, and it gave the RailCats their eleventh win over Schaumburg in June.
The game's first runs were scored in a manner quite similar to Friday night's affair. After Gary DH Mike Reese (1-for-4, RBI) hit a double to drive in a run and make it 1-0 in the top of the third, Schaumburg (16-25) came right back in the bottom half. A leadoff double by C Lance Koenig (1-for-3, Run) set the table for a sacrifice bunt to put a man on third with one out. Flyers LF Jermaine Allensworth (1-for-4, RBI) tied the game on an RBI single to left, and 2B Bo Hart (1-for-3, RBI) sent a double to the wall in the left-field corner that drove in Allensworth for a 2-1 Flyers advantage.
Gary (23-17) tied the game up in the next half-inning after loading the bases with nobody out. RailCats 3B Eric Blakeley (0-for-4) grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored the runner at third base. Quickly the score was back at 2-2, which set the stage for a pitcher's duel. Both Schaumburg starter Brad Mumma and Gary starter Jeremy Plexico were great in this game. Although neither hurler factored in the decision, Mumma threw eight innings of two-run baseball with five strikeouts, and Plexico went seven full innings - allowing two runs and striking out six Flyers. The teams traded outs and chances throughout the middle and later innings . . . the best of which was snuffed out on a double play Flyers SS Mark Haske (1-for-4) helped turn to end the top of the eighth inning.
With Mumma exiting in the top of the ninth inning, Flyers manager Steve Maddock sent in Jim Popp (2-4) in relief. Popp started the frame well, getting Blakeley to strike out swinging for one out. After walking Gary 1B Mike Rohde (0-for-3, Run), catcher Anthony Esquer (1-for-4) singled to right field on a hit-and-run to put men on the corners with one out. That's when CF Rob Marconi (2-for-3, RBI) sent the sacrifice fly to right that scored Rohde to make it 3-2.
As closer Nate Hoelscher (SV 6) warmed up hurriedly in the right-field bullpen, Gary manager Greg Tagert left reliever Koichi Misawa (2-1) out for one batter in the ninth after working an efficient eighth inning. After Misawa induced a flyout from Flyers CF Kurt Crowell (1-for-4), Hoelscher came on to shut the door . . . but the Flyers fought to keep it open. Two straight singles from 1B Chris Gaskin (3-for-4) and newly signed RF Dan Maycock (1-for-3) put Flyers on first and second bases with one out. That's when Gary's closer buckled down and got Koenig to fly out to center field for the second out, and struck out Haske to end the game.
Since these two teams don't meet for a whole month after Sunday's game, the Flyers will be keen to pick up a win. Schaumburg has not yet announced its starter, but Gary will send out LHP Drew Dickinson (2-2, 5.57) in its bid for a sweep. Bring man's best friend to the ballpark on Petland Dog Day at Alexian Field in time for the 1:20 p.m. start, or listen online at flyersbaseball.com.
