Schaumburg Flyers News Release

Schaumburg, IL - If you were a Schaumburg Flyers fan, it was the situation you wanted to see. Two outs, bottom of the ninth inning, and slugger Peanut Williams at the plate with a chance to tie the game with a home run. Unfortunately, Peanut was unable to connect with the pitching of Kansas City T-Bones closer David Trahan and the Flyers lost to the T-Bones 7-5 at Alexian Field. The T-Bones hitters were able to connect for all seven runs against Schaumburg starter Matt Varner (0-2), and that provided the support Kansas City hurler Rick Rivas (2-0) needed for the victory.

It was an interesting game from the very first pitch, as Kansas City (11-4) SS Geoff McCallum hit an inside-the-park home run on Varners initial offering. It was a popup down the left field line that Alfred Joseph tried to track down, but as he came under the ball he slipped on the wet outfield grass and fell down. Meanwhile, McCallum never stopped running on the play, and he scored easily. Joseph left after the play with an apparent leg injury, and Dustin Matthews (1-for-4) took his place in left field.

Varner did recover after the early home run, though, and pitched three scoreless innings after that to give Schaumburg (6-9) a chance to take the lead. C Ryan Luther (2-for-5) doubled to lead off the home half of the fourth inning, and DH Peanut Williams (1-for-5, RBI) singled him in to tie the affair at one. After a wild pitch by Rivas moved Williams to second, SS Mark Haske (1-for-3, RBI) came through with a single to give the Flyers a 2-1 advantage.

The T-Bones bats just wouldnt be denied, however, as they scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to re-take the lead at 4-2. After the Flyers got one back in the bottom half of that inning, they got another in the sixth on a Lance Koenig (0-for-3, RBI) bouncer up the middle that Geoff McCallum couldnt field cleanly at shortstop. That made the score 5-4, and the Flyers looked poised to take the lead in the coming innings.

But with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Matt Varner looked poised to get out of a jam after a 2-out double by T-Bones LF Brad Correll. He had two strikes on 1B Jim Fasano as the home crowd cheered . . . and Fasano seized the opportunity by sending a two-run home run over the right field wall. That long ball made it 7-4 in favor of Kansas City, and although Koenigs RBI groundout in the eighth inning cut the deficit to two runs, the Flyers couldnt push across the tying tallies in the bottom of the ninth. T-Bones closer David Trahan (1-0, 5 SV) allowed a two-out double to Flyers 2B Bo Hart (2-for-5, RBI), but struck out Williams to end the contest.

Now the Flyers turn to their ace to earn the victory in tomorrow evenings game against Kansas City. Schaumburg starter Brian Finch (0-0, 2.21) will take the mound opposite T-Bones star hurler Anthony Boughner (2-0, 1.42) in a 6:05 p.m. contest at Alexian Field. Come out to the ballpark to see it all for yourself, or listen to flyersbaseball.com for the call from Matt Tarnawa and Qumar Zaman.
