Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) today announced that former Cannons defenseman Rodger Colbert will join the team as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2008 season, according to Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud.
"Rodger expressed that he really wanted to be involved with the Cannons this year," said Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye. "He tried to make a comeback in training camp from the leg injury that he suffered last season, but unfortunately he still isn't 100 percent and couldn't get back on the field with us. Having another set of eyes watching from the sidelines as well as from the press box will definitely help us improve and make faster defensive adjustments on the fly."
Colbert's main responsibilities as a volunteer assistant coach will include helping Daye break down film for man-down purposes as well as scouting the Cannons' opponents.
Having played with the Cannons last season, Colbert has a familiarity with the team's defensive systems and understands what they are trying to accomplish.
"Rodger has a great relationship with a lot of the players from last year and more specifically our close defense and goalies," said Daye. "He understands what we're trying to do back there from a defensive standpoint. Having someone like Rodger to help prepare the defense each week will definitely be of great value to us."
A standout defenseman from the Georgetown University graduating class of 2001, Colbert appeared in eight games for the Cannons in 2007, his first season with the team, and collected 11 groundballs and one penalty minute.
The Cannons are set to open the 2008 season at their home field of Harvard Stadium versus the New Jersey Pride on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 PM. The game will air live on Comcast SportsNet New England.
Season Ticket Packages are on sale now and feature all three MLL playoff games as NB Zip MLL Championship Weekend returns to Boston, in addition to great seats at all seven Cannons home games this season.
