Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ -The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears will play their first home game of the 2008 regular season tomorrow, Tuesday, April 29, when the club plays host to the Bridgeport Bluefish. Gates open at 6:05 PM, and the game is set to begin at 7:05 PM.

Prior to First Pitch, the Bears will celebrate their 2007 Atlantic League Championship with the raising of a commemorative championship banner and a ring presentation. Bears manager Wayne Krenchicki and pitching coach Steve Foucault are among seven returnees from the title-winning team of 2007. Outfielder Keith Reed, infielder Vic Gutierrez, catcher John Pachot, and pitchers Ed Almonte and JJ Trujillo are current Bears players who helped the club win the crown a year ago.

Three other players---shortstop Ramon Castro, pitcher Jose Garcia, and outfielder Jose Herrera, the championship series MVP---have not yet been able to report to the club, but will all once again join the Bears shortly, though they will not be present for Tuesday's ceremony.

All fans in attendance Tuesday will receive a 2008 Newark Bears magnetic schedule, presented by WSOU-89.5 FM., and will be able to enjoy a post-game fireworks spectacular. In addition, the popular traveling mascot Rally will be on hand to entertain the crowd along with the Bears own loveable mascot, Rip-n-Ruppert.

Former Major League right-hander Will Cunnane (0-0) will make the start for the Bears tomorrow night. Cunnane tossed a scoreless inning in relief Friday night against the Long Island Ducks in his Bears debut. The Bears are (1-2) to open up the 2008 season.
