Bellingham Slam News Release
EDMONTON, Alta. - The Bellingham Slam used a balanced scoring attack as they defeated the Edmonton Chill for the second straight game, 124-106 in an International Basketball League contest at the Grant MacEwan Centre on Sunday.
Guard Ryan Diggs led four Slam players that surpassed the 20-point plateau with 24 points. Forward Lukas Henne contributed a solid double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Unlike Saturday night, the Chill came out rolling, storming out to a 7-0 lead. But the Slam were eventually able to curtail the Chill's offence and only trailed by two after the first quarter, at 23-21.
Edmonton and Bellingham continued to jockey for the lead throughout the second quarter, with 12 lead changes occurring before the Slam closed out the first half with a vicious dunk by Henne to take a 54-52 lead into the break.
The Chill kept up with the Slam well into the third quarter, until the Slam were able to take the lead for good on a driving lay-in by guard Jacob Stevenson with 4:07 left in the period. After that, the Slam outscored the Chill 14-7 in the quarter to take a nine-point lead, at 88-79, into the fourth.
Bellingham appeared the be the better conditioned team down the stretch as the Chill struggled to tame the Slam's offense throughout the fourth quarter. The Slam built their advantage as high as 19 points midway through the quarter before the Chill mounted a slight comeback and trimmed their deficit to 10 with 2:33 left to play. But Edmonton couldn't get any closer as Bellingham closed out the game with a 10-2 run.
Jacob Stevenson and Paul Hafford also joined the 20-point club for the Slam, with 21 points apiece.
Forward Teon Knox led Edmonton with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Forward J.R. Patrick, who guaranteed a 30-point victory to the local media, scored 17 points on a tepid 7-for-20 shooting performance.
Bellingham swept the season series with Edmonton, two games to none, following a 129-125 victory on Saturday night.
The Slam return home to face their arch-rivals, the Snohomish County Explosion, on May 3. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
