Harrisburg Stampede News Release
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (April 26, 2008) - New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston has joined the ownership group of the AIFA's new Harrisburg expansion franchise. The team will begin play in the 2009 season, with the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center serving as the team's home arena.
Colston is a native of Harrisburg and will be a partial owner of the franchise in its inaugural season. After that, he will be slated to take over control of the team from co-partner John Morris.
Colston is an incredible football success story. As a seventh-round pick in the 2006 National Football League draft, he established himself as an outstanding NFL receiver with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Last year he logged 1,202 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.
Colston was a two-sport standout at Susquehanna Township High School in Harrisburg, where he lettered in football and track. He achieved all-conference honors as both a wide receiver and a defensive end. He also qualified for the PIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the javelin.
Colston turned down a scholarship offer from the University of Missouri to play his college football at I-AA Hofstra. He teamed with DeVale Ellis, now with the Detroit Lions, to form one of the most potent receiving combinations in college football. In forty games, Colston caught 182 passes for a school-record 2,834 yards and 18 TD's. For his efforts, he was named All-Atlantic 10 first team.
"I am very excited about the potential of this franchise," said Morris. "And with Marques involved, we are bringing together the right people to make it happen."
