Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - The road thus far has been kinder to the Lancaster JetHawks then their own park. They continued their road success Thursday night, winning the opening game of their trip 5-3 over the Bakersfield Blaze. The JetHawks hit a pair of home runs and got strong work from their starter and bullpen in the win.
The starting pitchers battled for supremacy early. Jaymie Russ had a no-hitter going for Lancaster until allowing a solo home run in the fourth to put Bakersfield up 1-0. The JetHawks rallied against Blaze starter John Bannister in the sixth. Lars Anderson walked and Jon Still reached on an error. Reid Engel doubled home Anderson to tie the game. Bakersfield brought in J.B. Diaz out of the bullpen, but Diaz, who served up four home runs to Lancaster last year, gave up a three-run blast to Jorge Jimenez to give the JetHawks the lead. Jimenez has now hit safely in nine straight games.
Still added a solo home run in the eighth inning, his minor league-leading seventh home run of the season. Newcomer Carlos Vasquez, making his JetHawks debut, earned the victory in relief while Brian Steinocher picked up his second save.
The JetHawks continue their seven-game road trip Friday night at Bakersfield. Travis Beazley (0-2) will start for Lancaster against Blaze pitcher Tommy Hunter (1-2). The game starts at 7:15 with the pre-game show on Magic 1340 and www.JetHawks.com beginning at 7:00.
