 Quad Cities River Bandits

Name The Mascot: Phase Two

March 10, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The fans have spoken and the finalists have been unveiled in the ongoing Name the Mascot contest, as the Quad Cities River Bandits announced on Monday the remaining names that will be voted on over the next 11 days.

On February 27, the River Bandits teamed up with GCO Flooring Outlet to announce the contest in conjunction with WQAD NewsChannel 8 and the Dispatch/Argus. The new mascot is fashioned after the playful and mischievous raccoon that is the focal point of the team's new logo and identity. The raccoon, which is being created by Scollon Productions in White Rock, South Carolina, will feature a black fedora with a red hatband along with the signature red bandana. He will wear a jersey similar to that worn by River Bandits players during home games at Modern Woodmen Park.

The first phase of the contest consisted of an open write-in period, as fans offered their suggestions for the new name. From those suggestions the field was narrowed down to the following five finalists:

„« Rascal

„« Rocky

„« Roscoe

„« Smokey

„« Woody

¡§What a great group of names,¡¨ said team owner Dave Heller. ¡§We knew that if we gave our fans the opportunity to brainstorm the mascot¡¦s new name we would get a lot of great options, and that¡¦s exactly what happened. I could see any of those names becoming commonplace in the ballpark.¡¨

Now, it is once again up to the fans to pick the winner. From March 10-21, fans will be able to vote between the above finalists by logging on to any of the following websites: www.riverbandits.com, www.wqad.com, or www.qconline.com. Walk-in entries will also be accepted at two area GCO Flooring Outlet locations (5330 Jersey Ridge Road in Davenport and 4004 48th Avenue in Moline), Modern Woodmen Park, the WQAD NewsChannel 8 studios, and the Dispatch/Argus offices.

¡§It¡¦s a lot of fun to get to see all of the names that were turned in, and I think the five remaining ones are a good batch,¡¨ said Vice President/General Manager Kirk Goodman. ¡§With baseball season just over three weeks away its nice to be able to think warm thoughts and look forward to sunshine, hot dogs, and River Bandits baseball!¡¨

After an off-season full of upgrades, the Quad Cities River Bandits will open the 2008 campaign at Modern Woodmen Park on April 3! Merchandise featuring the new team name and logo is currently available by visiting the Modern Woodmen Park team store, and season ticket packages, mini-packages, and the all-new You-Pick-10 Plan are on sale at the park or by calling (563) 3-BANDIT!
