Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
After a long week of hockey that started at home then to Prince Edward Island and back home again, the MAINEiacs enter the homestretch of the 2007-2008 QMJHL regular season. With Acadie-Bathurst's overtime loss to Gatineau on Sunday the MAINEiacs sit in a tie for fourth place with six games to go. Lewiston will need to continue to fight for fourth place to secure home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
This week the MAINEiacs could catch and gain some ground on Cape Breton and Acadie-Bathurst with 3 games all at home against eastern division opponents. First up will come division rival Saint John. Lewiston will be looking for revenge from the 2-1 loss on February 24 at Harbor Station. After the Sea Dogs leave town, the MAINEiacs will be hosting 2 games with the St. John's Fog Devils for the last time ever during the regular season at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Fog Devils have been sold, and the team will move to Verdun, Quebec after the 2007-2008 season.
Saint John will come into the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Tuesday, March 4th in the middle of a grueling road trip that will take them to five cities and over 2,500 miles. This is by far the hardest and longest road trip the Sea Dogs have taken this year pitting them against Telus division leaders, Rouyn-Noranda and Gatineau, and eastern division rivals Cape Breton and Lewiston. So far the Sea Dogs are 1-2 on the road trip with the lone win coming against Val-D'Or. The Sea Dogs lost to Gatineau 5-1 on Thursday, and were shut out in a 4-0 decision against Rouyn-Noranda. This will be a great opportunity for Lewiston to take advantage of a weary Saint John squad and gain two points against the division rivals. The MAINEiacs are 3-4 against Saint John this year, but are 2-1 on home ice.
On Friday and Sunday the St. John's Fog Devils will play their last regular season games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Fog Devils have all but locked up a 6th place finish in the eastern division, and are looking to finish their franchise history in St. John's on a good note. Lewiston is 2-2 against the Fog Devils this season. The last time the MAINEiacs played St. John's was on November 25 when the Fog Devils handed Lewiston a 2-1 loss in the shootout. The two games against St. John's will be a much needed 4 points in the race for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Lewiston forward Stefano Giliati is inching closer to two records in the MAINEiacs record books. Currently, Giliati is three goals and five points away from breaking Mathieu Aubin's records as the all-time MAINEiacs goal scorer and points scorer.
