Detroit Shock News Release
Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the Shock has re-signed Plenette Pierson the team's top reserve and 2007 WNBA 6th Woman of the Year. Per team policy, financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Pierson, 26, was the second leading scorer (11.2) and third leading rebounder (7.2) during Detroit's 2007 postseason run. Entering her sixth season in the league, and her fourth with the Shock, Pierson has averaged 8.2 points and 4.0 rebounds during her WNBA career. During the 2007 campaign - where she earned her 6th Woman of the Year honors - Pierson played in all 34 games and averaged 11.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.
Pierson, a Texas Tech graduate, was originally drafted with the fourth pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. The Shock acquired her in a June 29, 2005 trade in exchange for Andrea Stinson and the Shock's 2006 second round draft pick.
The Shock also signed two recent collegians to Training Camp contracts - former Middle Tennessee State guard Chrissy Givens and former University of Texas guard Nina Norman. Givens, a two-time Sun Belt Player of the Year honoree, was selected in the third round (No. 31 overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury, but was waived prior to the start of the regular season. This is Norman's first time on a WNBA training camp roster.
