Two Georgia Teams Join AIFASeptember 28, 2007 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
"It's an absolute pleasure to make the announcement that we have signed Columbus and Augusta," said AIFA co-founder John Morris. "We just couldn't be happier. This helps to solidify our league here in the South, and it allows us to work toward the several divisions we've talked about throughout the course of the season."
The two teams, both previous members of the World Indoor Football League, offer a combination of good geographical locations and solid ownership. They met in last season's World Indoor Football Bowl, with Augusta winning the WIFL crown 63-60 in the closing seconds. Jason Gibson of the Lions was named the league "Coach of the Year."
"The league is only as strong as the owners in it," Morris said. "For us to be able to add these ownership groups to our mix in the South is very exciting for myself and Michael (Mink, also an AIFA co-founder)."
Both the Spartans and the Lions are centrally located, in relation to existing AIFA teams. This will help keep travel costs at a reasonable level, while enhancing the possibilities for some outstanding regional rivalries.
"That has been one of our focuses," said Morris. "You put Columbus and Augusta in that mix, it's just a great fit. We couldn't be happier with the situation. When you look at these teams, you truly can say that we're probably one of the best leagues out there as far as talent is concerned."
The AIFA also announced that they will now prepare a schedule for their East Coast teams, as negotiations continue related to additional expansion.
