Race To Reach World Bowl Closest In League History As All Six Teams Separated By One Game

May 15, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

IT'S official. The race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV in Frankfurt on Saturday, June 23 is the closest in league history after five weeks of play.

With the 2007 campaign set to enter its second half this week, all six clubs are separated by just one game in the standings.

The previous closest race at the mid-season mark was in 1997 when the top and bottom clubs were separated by two games.

And with all 3-2 clubs facing 2-3 teams in Week 6, the 2007 NFL Europa season could possibly enter its final four weeks with all six teams boasting the same record.

The Week 6 action begins on Friday night when the Amsterdam Admirals (2-3) play host to a Hamburg Sea Devils (3-2) club that defeated the Dutch team last weekend to record a second straight victory.

Saturday's contest sees the return leg in the battle for the Rhein Cup as the Rhein Fire (2-3) visits its local rivals in the Cologne Centurions (3-2). Cologne won the previous meeting between the teams in Week 3.

Week 6 concludes on Sunday afternoon when the Frankfurt Galaxy (3-2) welcomes the Berlin Thunder (2-3) to Commerzbank Arena - site of World Bowl XV.

Who plays in that stadium for the NFL Europa championship in June remains far from clear.

(Cover story Continued...)

After seeing his club suffer a heart-breaking loss in Hamburg last weekend, Amsterdam head coach BART ANDRUS is still expecting his Admirals to be in good spirits when they welcome the Sea Devils to the Netherlands.

He says: "It came down to one play at the end and we didn't make the play. I was proud of what our guys did after halftime. They didn't give up and they came back. That was the real positive for us."

Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO has coaxed back-to-back wins out of his team and prepares to visit the Admirals, saying: "Give credit to Amsterdam. We felt like we had control in the first half but they came out and put us on our heels pretty much the entire second half. It was a really hard game and a big win for us."

Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ takes his team on the road to face the Cologne Centurions buoyed by a hard-fought victory over the league-leading Galaxy last weekend.

He says: "We've played close games like that before and I'm really proud of my players. They hung in there when things weren't going as well as we would have liked."

Cologne Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN saw something positive in his team last week as they rebounded from a 31-28 loss to Berlin in Week 4 to record a 24-10 win in the German capital.

He says: "Good teams respond positively in adverse conditions and we did just that in Berlin. It was a big win for our team and I am very proud of my players."

Two clubs who lost in Week 5 will clash this weekend as the Thunder and Galaxy go head to head in Frankfurt.

Berlin head coach JOHN ALLEN may be glad to head on the road again after dropping a third straight home game last weekend.

He says: "I don't believe in curses or superstitions but we are not finishing at home for some reason. We started off pretty fast against Cologne last week but we didn't finish.

"We'll get that corrected and we'll focus on the next two road games and then come back to Berlin. The players know we need to win our last two home games. We'll take it one game at a time and see what happens."

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES will be out to halt a two-game losing slide this weekend. He saw his club blow a 10-point third quarter lead at Rhein.

He says: "We did a pretty good job in the first half but the second half was a different story. But I have to take my hat off to Rhein - they made some plays, fought hard and played a great game.

"We cannot look back now. You're going to have situations like this in football. Hopefully as a team we can bounce back from this."

Bramlet brothers make league history during aerial battle

IT was just like the times when they played in the back yard of their home while growing up in Wheatland, Wyoming.

Only this time, CASEY and COREY BRAMLET both got to play quarterback - and it was in front of more than 15,000 fans in Hamburg, a nationwide television audience on the NFL Network in the United States and with NFL scouts analyzing their every move.

During last weekend's meeting between the Hamburg Sea Devils and Amsterdam Admirals, Casey and Corey Bramlet became the first brothers to face off at quarterback in an NFL Europa contest.

And with Amsterdam starter DREW OLSON (Baltimore Ravens) nursing a sore calf, the pair could well meet again on Friday night as the Sea Devils visit the Netherlands for the return meeting.

Elder brother Casey Bramlet, of the Washington Redskins, led the Sea Devils to a 24-17 victory by completing 12 of 23 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Corey Bramlet replaced the injured Olson and completed 18 of 33 attempts for 200 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Casey Bramlet says: "It was great to get a chance to play against my brother. That was the first time that we've been able to do it and it ended up working out perfectly because we both got to play quite a bit.

"I was proud of how well he did. I was rooting for him because I wanted him to play well, but at the same time, I wanted us to win."

Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO says: "We're very happy with Casey and he did a good job of managing our offense."

Corey Bramlet adds: "I was really pleased with how everybody played. We showed a lot of poise. We have a lot of character on this team. To be down 17 points at halftime and we were able to come back and have a chance to win. It shows a lot about our team. We have them next week again. I can't wait for next week."

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS says: "I was very proud of the way Corey came off the bench."

The Bramlets were not the only brothers to go head to head in Week 5 as KEVIN and QUARTEZ VICKERSON played defensive line for the Cologne Centurions and Berlin Thunder respectively.

Kevin Vickerson, of the Miami Dolphins, recorded 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 quarterback hurry and 1 pass defense while helping the Centurions to a 24-10 victory.

Quartez Vickerson, who plays defensive tackle like his brother, recorded 2 solo tackles for the Thunder.

Keys to victory in NFL Europa

TAKE a stroll through any pro football locker room after a game and you are guaranteed to spot two things - a lot of tired bodies dragging themselves back into their street clothes and a head coach lost in thought as he studies the game statistics as if his life depended on it.

There are statistical keys to victory in every level of the sport and NFL Europa is no different. If you have success in certain areas each weekend, you are more likely than not going to emerge as a winner.

Through the opening five weeks of the 2007 NFL Europa season it seems the best way to guarantee a win is to score the game's first touchdown, win the turnover battle and ensure you head into the halftime break with your nose in front.

And never get into a situation where you need to throw for more yards than your opponent because it most probably means you are chasing a game that is getting out of hand.

Here are the records of teams who gained the edge in key statistical categories during the first half of the season.

Category team has edge in Record

Scored 1st points 8-7

Scored 1st touchdown 11-4

Most Total Yards 11-4

Most Rushing Yards 11-3

Most Passing Yards 6-8

Win Turnover Battle 9-1

Lead in Time of Possession 10-5

Lead at the half 12-3

Third Down Efficiency 10-4

Talking about the importance of being able to run the football effectively, Hamburg Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO says: "We always try to keep a balance with the run. We really feel like it's important to run the football. That is always in our plans."

Focusing on the importance of protecting the football, Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS adds: "If you look at statistics over the years in NFL Europa and the National Football League, the team that turns the football over the least wins the game."

History supports Andrus' claim. Of the past three World Bowls, two of those championship games - in 2004 and 2005 - have been contested by the clubs who finished the regular season with the league's best turnover ratios - Berlin and Frankfurt in 2004 and Amsterdam and Berlin in 2005.

Calculators at the ready as all six clubs eye World Bowl glory

WITH the entire league separated by just one game in the standings, the race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV in Frankfurt on June 23 is set to be an exciting affair for fans of NFL Europa.

Whether the head coaches of all six teams share in the excitement of the fans is questionable. They are sure to feel the stresses and strains in the coming weeks as the race for championship glory looks set to go down to the wire.

At the halfway stage of the 2007 season, the race to reach World Bowl has officially never been closer.

Here is a look at the best and worst records in each season since 1995, and the overall difference in games from top to bottom:

Season Best Record Worst Record Diff

1995 5-0 (Ams) 1-4 (Sco) 4 games

1996 4-1 (Sco) 1-4 (Rhe & Lon) 3 games

1997 4-1 (Bar) 2-3 (4 teams) 2 games

1998 5-0 (Rhe) 1-4 (Eng & Sco) 4 games

1999 4-1 (Bar) 1-4 (Ber) 3 games

2000 4-1 (Rhe) 1-4 (Fra) 3 games

2001 4-1 (Bar) 1-4 (Fra) 3 games

2002 4-1 (Rhe & Fra) 1-4 (Bar) 3 games

2003 4-1 (Bar) 1-4 (Ber) 3 games

2004 5-0 (Ber) 1-4 (Col & Sco) 4 games

2005 4-1 (Ber) 0-5 (Rhe) 4 games

2006 4-1 (Ams & Rhe) 0-4-1 (Ham) 3½ gms

2007 3-2 (Fra) 2-3 (Rhe) 1 game

After seeing his team improve to 2-3 last weekend, Fire head coach RICK LANTZ says: "Everybody is in the mix for the championship. The race will really go down to the wire."

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS adds: "We played in an exciting game last week. That's what NFL Europa is all about, evenly-matched teams playing down to the last second. The teams are all pretty even and that makes for a lot of great games."

NFLE FACTS:Home Comfort?

Berlin has posted a 1-7 record in its own stadium since the start of the 2006 campaign. In the previous two seasons (2004-05) the Thunder went 9-1 at home and reached World Bowl on both occasions.

NFLE FACTS:Leading the Way

With half of the 2007 NFL Europa season in the history books, Hamburg's CASEY BRAMLET leads the league with a passer rating of 98.3. He also leads NFLE with 7 touchdown passes and has been sacked a league-low 4 times on 114 dropbacks.

History suggests Galaxy will play in Frankfurt World Bowl

DESPITE losing to the Rhein Fire last weekend, the Frankfurt Galaxy remained at the top of the standings courtesy of their 2-0 record in games between them and the Cologne Centurions and Hamburg Sea Devils, who also boast 3-2 marks.

Being in pole position after five weeks of play usually bodes well in NFL Europa. In the previous 14 seasons, the club leading in the standings at the halfway mark has gone on to reach World Bowl on 13 occasions.

Only the 2003 Barcelona Dragons topped the standings after Week 5 and failed to reach the championship game, fading away after a 4-1 start to finish the year with a 5-5 record.

Here is a look a how those clubs leading the standings after five weeks of play have fared:

Season Leader after Wk 5 Fared

2006 Amsterdam (4-1) 7-3, Lost World Bowl

2005 Berlin (4-1) 7-3, Lost World Bowl

2004 Berlin (5-0) 9-1, Won World Bowl

2003 Barcelona (4-1) 5-5, Missed World Bowl

2002 Rhein (4-1) 7-3, Lost World Bowl

2001 Barcelona (4-1) 8-2, Lost World Bowl

2000 Rhein (4-1) 7-3, Won World Bowl

1991 London (5-0) # 9-1, Won World Bowl

* Qualified for World Bowl as first half champions

+ North American East Division Leaders

# European Division Leaders

Before they can even begin to think about World Bowl, Frankfurt will need to get back on a winning track and head coach MIKE JONES is expecting a better performance against Berlin this weekend.

He says: "We have to rebound and that's what I have told our guys. It's about character now. We have to show what type of character we have as a team. Obviously, we have to come out and play better next week.

"There is no use crying over spilled milk. I have to find a way to jumpstart our team. I have to do that. That's part of coaching."

NFLE FACTS:Fortress Frankfurt

Under head coach MIKE JONES, the Frankfurt Galaxy has posted a 12-5 record on home soil since 2004. Of those five losses, two have come against this weekend's opponent, Berlin, in 2004 and 2005. Frankfurt has reached two World Bowls under Jones.

Ross runs to new club record

COLOGNE Centurions running back DERRICK ROSS (Kansas City Chiefs) set a new club record last week when he carried 25 times for 143 yards against the Berlin Thunder.

That performance broke the previous record of 129 yards set by JAMAAL BRANCH, against the Thunder on May 14, 2006.

Ross says: "I'm happy to have the record but I wasn't concerned about it. I just wanted to win because we let one slip against those guys the previous week. But I have to thank my offensive line for helping me out.

"The win gets us back on track. We let one slip so we had to have this one. We can now get better and better and try to reach the World Bowl."

Through the opening five weeks of the 2007 season, Ross leads the league in the following categories:

Rushing Attempts: 113

Rushing Yards: 446

Rushing Touchdowns: 3

Total Yards from Scrimmage: 510

100-yard Rushing Days: 2

With five games still to play, Ross needs 273 yards to break Cologne's single season rushing record of 718 set by KORY CHAPMAN in 2005. He also needs 554 rushing yards to become just the fifth man in NFL Europa history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.

Here are the players to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season in NFL Europa:

Player/Team Season Yards

Roger Robinson (Fra) 2006 1,087

Mike Green (Bar) 2001 1,057

Joe Smith (Rhe) 2005 1,026

Lawrence Phillips (Bar) 1999 1,021

Paying tribute to his teammate's club record performance against Berlin, Centurions quarterback ERIK MEYER says: "Derrick ran hard and broke a lot of tackles. He ran well."

NFLE FACTS:Tough Running

Runners have found the going tough in NFL Europa this spring as rushing defenses have been among the best in league history. Through five games, there have been three 100-yard rushers compared to five at this stage in 2006 and six in 2005. The league rushing average of 3.7 yards per carry is on pace to be the second-lowest in NFLE history, behind the 3.5 yards per rush set in 1995.
