Aiken Foxhounds News Release
Aiken, SC - The South Coast League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Aiken Foxhounds pitcher Keith Ramsey has been signed by the Texas Rangers.
Ramsey, 27, was signed by Rangers scout Andy Pratt last week at a private workout and reported to minor league spring training in Surprise, AZ.
"Keith was slotted to be my #1 pitcher this season, but plans change," said Foxhounds Manager Chris Bando. "I couldn't be happier for him and I wish him the best of luck this year."
Ramsey, who attended the University of Florida, went 4-3 with a 2.25 ERA for the Gators in 2001 and was chosen in the 11th round by the Cincinnati Reds, but did not sign. The following season he compiled a 10-3 mark with a 3.88 ERA and was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round.
One of Ramsey's first stops for the Indians was with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (New York - Penn) in 2002. While pitching for the Scrappers, he formed a bond with his new coach Chris Bando. Ramsey continued on in the minors with the Indians, Phillies, Diamondbacks, and Rockies, making it all the way to AAA in 2004.
Last year, he played his first season of independent ball for the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League, and he felt that his dream may be slipping away. As fate would have it, long time friend and former coach Chris Bando was named manager of the SCL's Aiken Foxhounds and soon after gave Ramsey a call.
"Chris is a great coach and a better person and he has always believed in my abilities and talent," shared Ramsey. "I knew that coming to Aiken was the right choice for me in my career and I'm thankful for the opportunity that the South Coast League gave me."
The South Coast League is a six-team based independent professional baseball league located in the Southeastern U.S. whose philosophy is centered on player development and growth. The SCL's goal is to be a resource for Major League Baseball and a stepping stone for players eager to get back into the affiliated ranks.
