Scorpions snap losing streak with tough win over Arizona

[ PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. ]- For the eighth time in December the new CHL rivals met in Arizona . The Scorpions skated away with a 2-1 victory to end 2006 on a high note.

Play was physical and shots were aplenty throughout the game. Both team traded hits as they have the entire month of December then entire 60-minutes.

The Scorpions opened up the scoring 71-seconds into the game. Matt Frick blocked a clearing attempt by Arizona and fired the puck past goalie Chris King.

After a tough night on the penalty kill last night, the killers stood call when the Sundogs went to a five-on-three power play midway through the first period. Though the Scorpions killed the two-man advantage, Arizona 's David Svagrovsky notched his third goal of the year late in the first period tying the game at one.

In the second period an unlikely hero stepped up. Peter Kennedy tipped a Mike Prpich pass into the net in what proved to be the game winner. It was Kennedy's first professional goal and he couldn't have picked a better time to score it.

The Scorpions penalty kill was a key in the game going a perfect 10-for-10. Brad Smith earned his first win since November 9 and set a Scorpions season high with 45 saves. The win snapped a three game losing streak and moved New Mexico to within two points of first place.

The Scorpions will enjoy the week off before two weekend home game this Friday and Saturday. On Friday when the Scorpions host Amarillo , as Elvis will be in the building to celebrate his birthday. In addition, Miss New , Mrs. New , Miss Rio Rancho and Miss Albuquerque will be with Elvis to help celebrate his special day. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m.

On Saturday night the Scorpions will be back in action for "Military Appreciation Night" against Arizona . New Mexico will be in special "Stars and Stripes" jerseys and there will be special ceremonies honoring our soldiers currently serving, those who are retired from the military and the soldiers we have recently lost while in battle. After the game the jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to charities that support military families with soldiers currently serving overseas. The game at the Santa Ana Star Center begins at 7:05 p.m.
