U.S. National Team News Release

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team topped the Traverse City North Stars, 5-4 in overtime this afternoon at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Three third period goals and Jordan Schroeder's (Lakeville, Minn.) overtime goal led Team USA past North American Hockey League foe Traverse City.

Team USA got on the board first when Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) lifted a backhand shot over the shoulder of the North Stars netminder Kyle Jendra 5:19 into the game. Traverse City responded with two power-play goals in the second half of the first period to gain the 2-1 advantage after one frame.

In the second period Traverse City extended the lead to 4-1 with two even strength tallies, one 11:47 into the period and one with 4:22 remaining in the second frame.

Team USA came out flying in the third period and cut the North Stars lead to 4-2 when Danny Kristo (Eden Prarie, Minn.) notched his team-leading ninth goal of the season 2:27 into the period. Kelen Corkum (Newbury, Mass.) made it a one-goal game when he tallied his first goal of the season when he came in on the left wing and beat Jendra with a shot to the far side of the net 51 seconds later. U.S. forward David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) tied the game with nine minutes remaining when he blasted a shot from the left point off the cross bar and into the net behind Jendra on the power-play.

U.S. netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) and the Team USA defense kept the North Stars off the board the remaining nine minutes to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Schroeder buried a rebound off a Wohlberg shot that hit the post to give Team USA the 5-4 victory.

"Our guys really showed how we can play in the third period," said U.S. Head Coach John Hynes (Warwick, R.I.). "The team came together in the final 20-plus minutes and did the small things right that we need to do in order to be successful. We will look to carry the momentum from today forward as we progress through the next portion of our season."
