Renegades form Affiliation with Wheeling

July 19, 2006 - SPHL (SPHL)
Richmond Renegades News Release

The Richmond Renegades of the SPHL and the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL today jointly announced they were forming an affiliation; the first official affiliation in the SPHL.

"We have been speaking with Wheeling for some time as it will provide both teams with a way to recruit talent", stated John Brophy, Renegades head coach. "We both want to win a ring. It would be great to have Richmond, Wheeling and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton all win rings this season".

It was also announced today that Glenn Patrick would return as Wheeling's head coach. He guided Wheeling to their first playoff series victory since 1998 after posting a 45-21-6 season, the third highest number of wins in Wheeling franchise history.

"Like John (Brophy), our aim is to win a championship; the Kelly Cup", stated Patrick. "I know and trust John and his judgment so both teams will reap benefits from this".

"This is just an example of what John brings to the table", stated Allan B. Harvie, Jr., team President and GM. "Even though both teams are AA level hockey the ECHL has a more direct line to the AHL. We should see some quality players coming through Wheeling to Richmond this season".
