League-leading Admirals aim to maintain World Bowl charge

FOUR games and 240 minutes of football. That's all that separates each NFL Europe League team still dreaming of championship glory from an appearance in Yello Strom World Bowl XIV on Saturday May 27.

And while the Amsterdam Admirals have edged ahead at the top, the race to reach the title game in DÃ¼sseldorf remains wide open as only the winless Hamburg Sea Devils have been eliminated from post-season contention. The other four teams chasing the Admirals are separated by just two games.

With Week 7 pitting the top three teams in the standings against the bottom three, there is potential for an even tighter race heading into the home straight.

The action begins with the Amsterdam Admirals (5-1) paying a visit to the Hamburg Sea Devils (0-5-1), while the Rhein Fire (4-2) plays host to the Berlin Thunder (2-3-1).

The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon with the Frankfurt Galaxy (4-2) taking their three-game winning streak on the road to face the Cologne Centurions (2-4).

With four weeks of the regular season remaining, the Admirals are sitting comfortably on top of the standings and are full of confidence having won five games in a row.

However, head coach BART ANDRUS is adopting the 'one game at a time' mantra, insisting: "I think it is a little early to be talking about World Bowl. There is a lot of football still to be played before the World Bowl line-up is decided and traditionally it is going to take seven (wins) to clinch. We are a ways away from that so our intention is to go on the road and play in another tough place in Hamburg."

The Sea Devils will be keen to upset the table-topping Admirals following a disappointing loss in Cologne last week. Head coach JACK BICKNELL says: "It was a hard-fought game between two teams that needed a win. It was very critical for both of us. We were trying like crazy but we came up short at the end. These are great kids and they are trying to win."

The Fire will look to get back on track following back-to-back losses to the Admirals, the second of which prompted head coach JIM TOMSULA to say: "We made too many mistakes against a really good football team in Amsterdam. We have some good football players and we still feel very confident about the team we have. We just have to play the game cleaner."

Rhein will take on a Berlin Thunder club coming off a loss in Frankfurt which leaves head coach RICK LANTZ insisting Saturday's trip to DÃ¼sseldorf is a must-win game for the three-time World Bowl champions.

He says: "Even though I know teams have got into the World Bowl with four losses, having three losses and a tie at this point is not the easiest way to do it. We are not in control of our destiny any longer but we have to keep playing as hard as we can and get wins each week, because every game in this league is going to be close."

The Galaxy heads to Cologne needing a win to maintain a World Bowl charge that was buoyed with a last-gasp victory over Berlin last weekend.

Head coach MIKE JONES is proud of his team, which is riding a three-game winning streak, saying: "When you look at how we have come together as a team, you can see the character coming out. The win over Berlin was huge. It gives us momentum and helps us realize that we make life very difficult for the teams that have to come to Frankfurt in the second half of the season. We can play with the best of them."

Cologne head coach DAVID DUGGAN saw his Centurions snap a four-game losing streak to remain in the World Bowl race and said of his players: "They represented the city of Cologne very well. They saw the value of sticking together as a team and I am very proud of them."

Galaxy using 'Rabbit Power' to boost World Bowl challenge

THE sight of ROGER 'RABBIT' ROBINSON darting through an opposing defense for big yardage has become a familiar and successful one for Frankfurt Galaxy fans this season.

The speedy Arizona Cardinals-allocated running back has become the key cog in a Frankfurt Galaxy attack that ranks second in NFL Europe and one of the main reasons the club is 4-2 and in the thick of the World Bowl race with four weeks of the regular season remaining.

Robinson rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown during Frankfurt's 18-17 win over Berlin and was named Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Despite missing a Week 5 defeat of Hamburg with a head injury, Robinson remains on pace to rush for 1,037 yards this season, which would place him second on the all-time charts behind Mike Green (Barcelona Dragons, 2001), who rushed for 1,057 yards.

Robinson has four 100-yard rushing games in five appearances this season and Frankfurt has gone 3-1 in those contests. He needs two more 100-yard outings to tie the league record of six in a single season set by Rhein's Joe Smith in 2005.

And with Robinson leading the way behind a strong offensive line, Frankfurt is on course to rush for 1,602 yards. That figure would rank third on the all-time single season charts behind the 1999 Rhein Fire (1,686 yards) and the 2003 Scottish Claymores (1,606 yards).

Frankfurt leads NFL Europe in rushes (206), rushing yards (961) and yards per carry (4.7). Robinson leads the league with 622 yards on 115 carries (5.4 average).

Robinson, who carried 5 times for 47 yards and added a 6-yard catch on Frankfurt's game-winning drive last week, says: "Going into the Berlin game I felt fresher and it may have been a blessing in disguise to have a week off to help my body heal. Their defense came out to stop the run but our offensive line wore them down and as the game went on it was getting easier to run the football.

"That last drive just showed that all the hard work we put in through the first 55 minutes paid off."

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES adds: "When you get up to 40 rushing attempts (Frankfurt had 42 for 203 yards) it tends to wear on a defense. On the last series, Roger was able to get some big yardage. We couldn't get big yards until towards the end of the game. I am sure one of the reasons for that was that their defense was worn down."

Admirals move a step closer to club record winning streak

BY recording a 30-21 victory over the Rhein Fire on Saturday night, the Amsterdam Admirals moved a step closer to matching their best winning streak in franchise history.

Following an opening night loss to Berlin, the Admirals have won five games in a row - that is the best winning streak since the club opened its inaugural 1995 campaign with a 7-0 mark.

Explosive offense remains the not-so-secret key to Amsterdam's success as the Dutch club remains on pace to score 317 points this season - that would smash the single season record of 310 set by the London Monarchs in 1991.

For an example of Amsterdam's firepower, you need only look at how the Admirals dismantled the Rhein Fire's league-leading defense in the past fortnight.

In the opening four games of the year, the Fire allowed an average of 9.25 points per game en route to a 4-0 record. In back-to-back losses to the Admirals, Rhein allowed an average of 32.5 points per contest.

Speaking about his team's second successive victory over the Fire, Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS says: "I thought it was an entertaining game with a lot of scoring. I was extremely proud of the way our guys came in and played well and remained focused against a well-prepared Fire team."

The Admirals have scored more than 30 points in each of their last four games and have topped that mark in eight of their last 14 regular season contests dating back to Week 3 of the 2005 campaign.

Amsterdam's offensive stars are also on pace to write their names in the record books.

Quarterback GIBRAN HAMDAN (Seattle Seahawks) leads the league with 1,307 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. His QB rating of 114.5 - if maintained - would eclipse the single season mark of 107.3 set by Scotland's Kevin Daft in 2000.

Hamdan is also averaging 10.29 yards per attempt this season and is on pace to surpass the single season record of 9.35 set by David Archer, of the 1992 Sacramento Surge.

Wide receiver SKYLER FULTON (Seattle Seahawks) leads NFL Europe with 29 receptions for 665 yards and is on pace to end the season with 1,108 receiving yards, which would shatter the all-time record of 1,023, set by Scotland's Sean LaChapelle in 1996. Fulton needs to average 89.75 receiving yards per game in the remaining month of the regular season to break the record.

Sea Devils go in search of much-needed victory in Week 7

AFTER a testing start to the 2006 season, the Hamburg Sea Devils will go in search of a much-needed victory when they play host to the table-topping Amsterdam Admirals on Saturday evening.

No team has gone this far into a season without a victory since the 1992 Ohio Glory, who won in Week 7 of a campaign that saw them finish with a 1-9 record.

The only other team to go six weeks into a season without a win was the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, who went 0-10 in the inaugural 1991 campaign.

In the remaining four weeks of the season, Hamburg faces the 5-1 Admirals twice, the 4-2 Rhein Fire and a trip to the German capital to take on the Berlin Thunder.

They will need to win at least one of those contests to avoid becoming the second winless club in NFL Europe League history.

Despite their troubles, Sea Devils head coach JACK BICKNELL sees no quitting from his team, stating: "I don't have anybody in my dog house because they are working their butts off. You could say we are not very good, but don't say we don't play and try as hard as we can.

"When you have not won, it's hard to be confident, so it could be holding us back. Things have not gone our way and I think a win would solve a lot of things and might get us on a run. I think if we had that confidence it might make us a better team."

NFLEL FACTS: Missed Chances

In their last four games, the Hamburg Sea Devils have seen fourth quarter leads turn into a tie and three losses. In Week 3, Hamburg led Berlin 17-7 in the final period and ended tied 17-17. In Week 4, they led Rhein 21-14 and lost 31-21. In Week 5, the Sea Devils were 13-10 up on Frankfurt and lost 17-13. And last weekend they led Cologne 10-6 before losing 20-17.

NFLEL FACTS: Record Pace

Amsterdam Admirals Japanese WR NORIAKI KINOSHITA leads NFL Europe with a kickoff return average of 31.8 yards (on 13 returns). If he maintains that average, it would rank third all-time, behind single season efforts by Rafael Cooper (33.6 for Amsterdam in 2002) and Sulecio Sanford (32.3 for Scotland in 2000).

Amsterdam Admirals lead NFL Europe with 27 offensive plays covering 20+ yards (8 rush, 19 pass). By contrast, their Week 7 opponents, Hamburg, rank sixth with 14 offensive plays of 20 yards or more (2 rush, 12 pass).

Master takes on former pupil in must-win game for both teams

THE last time RICK LANTZ and JIM TOMSULA met on the football field, Lantz was tutoring his former defensive coordinator on the finer nuances of the two-minute offense.

That last-minute tutorial took place just moments before Tomsula's Rhein Fire inflicted a 22-0 shut-out on Lantz's Berlin Thunder, and prompted the rookie head coach to say of his former boss: "I can't say how strongly I feel about that man."

Since that Week 2 meeting in Berlin, both head coaches have enjoyed mixed fortunes but remain very much alive in the race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XIV in DÃ¼sseldorf on Saturday May 27.

Tomsula opened his head coaching career with four straight wins, joining four other coaches, including Lantz, who achieved such a feat. Since then he has seen his club's progress slowed by back-to-back losses to Amsterdam.

Lantz has seen his Thunder team blow hot and cold en route to a 2-3-1 record that leaves them needing a win at the LTU arena on Saturday night.

Looking ahead to the all-important clash with the assistant he won a World Bowl ring with in 2004, Lantz says: "Coach Tomsula is a very close associate of mine, so I would not want to embarrass him by not playing good football against the Rhein Fire.

"We are really down right now after losing to Frankfurt but I promise you this team will pick themselves up and be ready to play a great game against Rhein on Saturday. We have to continue to give a good effort and play as hard as we can."

NFLEL FACTS: Home Form

In the past three weeks of NFLEL action, home teams have posted a combined 7-2 record. For the season, home teams are 10-7-1 yet only one team is perfect on home soil - the 3-0 Frankfurt Galaxy. Home teams went a combined 20-10 during the 2005 season. Amsterdam Admirals are the league's road warriors, posting a 3-0 mark away from the Amsterdam ArenA.

Amsterdam Admirals kicker RYAN KILLEEN (Seattle Seahawks) needs to successfully convert 15 PATs in the final four games of 2006 to break the single season mark of 37 successful extra points held by Phil Alexander (37 of 39 for London Monarchs in 1991) and Rob Hart (37 of 38 for Scottish Claymores in 2003). Killeen has converted 23 of 23 PATs and leads NFLEL with 44 points.

Many happy returns for NFLEL vets leading the way in 2006

WHILE each NFL Europe League season brings an influx of new and exciting young talent from the NFL, it remains clear that veterans with European experience are vital to a team's World Bowl chances.

Never has that been more evident than in 2006, with four major statistical categories being led by players who have starred in the NFL Europe League in previous years.

Amsterdam Admirals quarterback GIBRAN HAMDAN (Seattle Seahawks) is in his third season in the Netherlands and currently leads NFL Europe with 1,307 yards, 11 touchdowns and a passer rating of 114.5.

Admirals Japanese wide receiver NORIAKI KINOSHITA - in his second NFLEL campaign - leads the league with 13 kickoff returns for 414 yards (31.8 average) with a long of 82 yards.

Frankfurt Galaxy wide receiver ADAM HERZING (Pittsburgh Steelers) - who won All-NFLEL honors with the Rhein Fire in 2004 - tops the league with a punt return average of 10.1 yards, racking up 121 yards on 12 runbacks.

Rhein Fire defensive end DERRICK STRONG is also in his second tour of duty in NFL Europe and is currently tied for the league lead with 4 quarterback sacks.
