Joe Franchino, Nick Garcia suspended for two games

NEW YORK (Tuesday, July 26, 2005) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today suspended New England Revolution defender Joe Franchino and Kansas City Wizards defender Nick Garcia for two games each and fined them $500 each for their actions in games played during the weekend of July 22-23, 2005. The MLS Players Union has appealed the Franchino decision and a ruling by MLS Commissioner Don Garber is expected prior to the Revs game on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Franchino's sanctions come as a result of a serious foul play in the 87th minute against Chivas USA midfielder Hector Cuadros in the Revs 1-0 loss on Friday, July 22 at The Home Depot Center. Franchino was cautioned on the play in which he fouled Cuadros from behind with both arms raised near Cuadros' head.
Garcia's suspension and fine were imposed for violent conduct against Columbus Crew forward Knox Cameron in the 47th minute of the Wizards' 2-0 defeat to the Crew on Saturday, July 23. The play, in which Garcia swung his left elbow back in the direction of Cameron, was not seen by the referee at the time.
Under the terms of the CBA agreement, the Players Union may submit an appeal to the Commissioner for any discipline imposed as a result of an on-field incident resulting in a fine $750 or higher and / or a suspension of two games or more. Upon receipt of the appeal, the Commissioner will designate a time and a place for a hearing to be held as soon as practicable following receipt by the League of the Union's notice of appeal. A suspension shall not be stayed pending appeal.
