Philadelphia KiXX News Release

Philadelphia, PA, May 3, 2005 – The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) announced today that Philadelphia KiXX forward John Barry Nusum has been selected the 2004-05 MISL Rookie of the Year. The native of Devonshire, Bermuda was selected following a week-long balloting process that polled media and team personnel from throughout the seven-team League. Voters were asked to cast a first-place vote (worth five points), a second-place vote (three votes), and third place vote (one point) for eligible MISL newcomers. Nusum, who received 78 percent of the first-place votes, was the only candidate to appear on every ballot.

"I am honored to chosen as the MISL's Rookie of the Year," Nusum said. "The MISL is a highly-competitive League and there were many deserving players throughout, some of which were my teammates on the KiXX. My main focus entering the season was to help the team attempt to win a championship and to have a good season for Philadelphia. Receiving this individual honor is for me an added bonus."

Nusum made an immediate impact with the KiXX in 2004-05, finishing his rookie season tied for ninth on the MISL Leaderboard (tied second team) with 45 points on 28 goals and 17 assists. He registered his first professional indoor point in the first action of his career in Cleveland on October 23, and then notched the first of his three career hat tricks versus Baltimore on November 6. Nusum concluded his rookie campaign with a pair of four-point performances and received the League's Offensive Player of the Week accolade for the seven-day period ending November 7. He was also named one of three forwards, and six players overall including teammate Chris Fehrle, to the 2004-05 MISL All-Rookie Team on Monday, May 2.

"To me, John was an obvious choice for Rookie of the Year this season," stated KiXX Head Coach Don D'Ambra. "He stepped up and made big plays for us all season, not to mention his great personality on and off the field, and his hard-work mentality. We hope to have him in a KiXX uniform for many years to come."

The 23-year-old Nusum also competes with the Bermuda National Team and was named Bermuda's 2004 Male Athlete of the Year at the 24th Annual Sports Awards Programme on February 17. The Furman University graduate, who was selected by the Columbus Crew in the 2002 Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft, holds the institution's all-time mark in goals (610) and points (161). He has also competed professionally with the Atlanta Silverbacks (2002, 2003) and the Toronto Lynx (2004) of the outdoor A-League.

Last week, the MISL announced that three members of Philadelphia KiXX were voted to the All-MISL First Team; D'Ambra nabbed his second All-League selection, while Philadelphia native Pat Morris pulled in his fourth such honor and all-star goalkeeper Peter Pappas received his seventh.

The Philadelphia KiXX are a member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), a single-entity organization that features a coast-to-coast presence across the United States. The club is currently in the midst of its ninth season of play in 2004-05 at the Wachovia Spectrum located in Philadelphia, PA. The team also operates the Philadelphia KiXX Summer Kamp program, which is offered to boys and girls, ages four to 18, throughout the Tri-State area.
