New York Lizards News Release
Long Island, NY (March 4, 2005) â The Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) took part in a career forum at Walt Whitman Senior High School Thursday, March 3, 2005. Pat McCabe, #29, a veteran defender and Team Captain for the Lizards represented his team at the event, hosted by Dave Bailey and Kathie Acker.
The forum presented tenth-grade students at Walt Whitman Senior High School with a diverse panel of professionals from a wide range of fields. Each panel member was given the opportunity to provide insight into his or her career and share personal anecdotes from experiences in the "real world."
McCabe was eager to share his history as a professional athlete, as well as the opportunities and challenges he faced as a student. A native of Long Island, and graduate of Elmont High School, McCabe explained his transition into collegiate life at Syracuse University. He stressed the importance of hard work and dedication to academics. McCabe asked students to "take advantage of opportunity, but also create opportunity" for themselves each and every day. He urged all of them to follow their hearts, but to also explore different things and immerse themselves in a variety of fields of study and activities.
The students engaged in a question and answer forum after the initial introductions were made. Fascinated and eager to learn more about the various careers, the students showed astute interest in ways they could better prepare themselves for college and life thereafter. McCabe encouraged students to work hard, study hard and get the most out of their education.
"If you have a dream, why not chase it," declared McCabe. "The worst thing to have in life is regret."
Facilitators also engaged in a question and answer session, asking thought provoking questions regarding the various career paths each panel member had taken. The forum lasted just over two hours and ended with uproarious applause from students as each participant was awarded a certificate of gratitude from Walt Whitman Senior High School.
