LONGUEUIL, February 7, 2005 (QMJHL) â The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced today the names of the offensive and defensive players of the week selected for the period between Monday, January 31, and Sunday February 6, 2005.
David Desharnais, centre for the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi, is the best offensive player for this week. Desharnais played three games in which he scored 5 goals and had 4 assists for a total of 9 points, apart from keeping a differential of +4. He scored two of his goals during man-advantage, and he was especially good at starting the games with an efficiency percentage of 57.1%.
Even with a shutout at his first game of the week, on Monday evening, as the visiting team, the Mooseheads, won 1-0, Desharnais was physically involved with 3 bodychecks. He pulled himself together on the following Friday when playing against the Drakkar de Baie-Comeau, as Chicoutimi won 9-3. Indeed, Desharnais scored his 22nd, 23rd and 24th goals of the season, and assisted his teammates on three occasions. He thus became the 7th player of the season to play a game of 6 points. He was named first star of the game.
On Sunday afternoon, playing in front of their peers, the Saguenéens won the game 4-3 against the Moncton Wildcats. David Desharnais totalled 3 points for two games in a row, with 2 goals and 1 assist, and he was named first star of the game. Following that win, Chicoutimi was ranking first at the general standings, with 72 points in 53 games, only one point ahead from Halifax, and 3 from Moncton.
As for David Desharnais, he went up to the 3rd rank of the scorers of the week with 78 points. He closely follows his teammate Maxime Boisclair who is ahead with 3 points. Sidney Crosby of the Océanic de Rimouski is ahead with 36 points. He is one of the players of the team against which the Saguenéens will be playing on next Tuesday evening.
David Desharnais was preferred to Stanislav Lascek, from the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi (2-0-8-8), Daniel Sparre, from the Halifax Mooseheads (4-5-2-7) and Benoit Doucet, from the Tigres de Victoriaville (4-5-0-5).
The honour for the best defensive player was given this week to the defenseman Jim Sharrow, from the Halifax Mooseheads. For the 4 games he played, Sharrow maintained a record of 2 goals and 2 assists, for a total of 4 points, and a differential of +5. He gave 5 bodychecks and had 19 shots on goal.
During the game of last Monday, as the two teams aiming for the first position of the general standings were meeting, Halifax won over Chicoutimi 1-0 in the Saguenéens' home town. Sharrow took part in the game by shooting on goal 4 times and by giving 3 bodychecks. He also helped his team go through 7 man-disadvantage situations in front of the 3rd most offensive team of the circuit. The next day, against the Drakkar in Baie-Comeau, Halifax won 3-2 in overtime. Sharrow scored his 11th goal of the season and had an assist on Daniel Sparre's winning goal.
When they returned in front of their fans, on Friday evening, the Mooseheads had a tie, 3-3, against the Titan d'Acadie-Bathurst. Jim Sharrow had 7 shots to goal and kept a differential of +1. Saturday, in a win of 6-3 against the Cataractes de Shawinigan, Sharrow had an assist, a differential of +2 and helped his goaltender Jason Churchill to win his 25th game of the season. During the week, Sharrow and the Mooseheads allowed only one goal in 23 man-disadvantage situations, giving them an efficiency percentage of 95.7%.
The 19 year-old American defenseman who now totals 36 points from which 12 goals in 52 games this season, has thus been an important element for the Mooseheads who gained 7 points in 4 games and who now rank 2nd in the general standings with 71 points, only one behind the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi (72). Halifax will try to get back to a first position next Wednesday in a game against the MAINEiacs in Lewiston.
