Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs win the 2004 USBL Championship

MILFORD, CT – The United States Basketball League, Inc. (USBL) completed its 19th season of play today, when the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs defeated the Brooklyn Kings 118-116 to capture the franchises second USBL Championship. The ValleyDawgs defeated the Dodge City Legend in 2001 to win their first USBL Championship.

The 2004 USBL Championship started with an Anthony Glover jumper for the Kings, and then Tim Winn, celebrating his birthday, answered with a lay up and away the Championship went. In a scene that would become common throughout the Championship contest, neither team could build more than a 3 point lead in the first quarter, nor at the end of the 1st quarter, the Kings led the ValleyDawgs 32-31. Already in the 1st quarter there were 8 ties and 12 lead changes. Marcus Fleming had 10 points for the ValleyDawgs and Mike Campbell and Uka Agbai each had 8 points for the Kings.

The 2nd quarter started with a two huge Kevin Lyde dunks, but the Kings answered with a Mike Campbell three-pointer. From there it turned into a free throw contest, with the Kings winning, 10 to 8, but behind on the scoreboard 58-53. The 3rd quarter got off with BJ McFarlan, continuing to have a breakout season and Festival, grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in to get the Kings within 3 points. Joe Crispin had a three-pointer but Mike Campbell continued to fill it up with a two more field goals and free throws to momentarily give the Kings the lead. Marcus Fleming again stepped up and got the lead back, but as the period ended, it was all tied at 86.

The final quarter in the 2004 USBL season got under way with a Marcus Fleming short jumper and a John Thomas lay up to but the ValleyDawgs up by four. Anthony Glover then hit four in a row from the line to tie the game at 90The teams both battled back and at the 3:56 mark, the game was tied for the 30th and final time at 104-104, on an Antawn Dobie free throw and then Dobie completed his set of free throws with another make, as the Kings grabbed their final lead of the nigh, 105-104. Lou White answered with a short jumper off an offensive rebound and the ValleyDawgs gained a lead that they would never relinquish.

John Thomas would make the 4th quarter all his own, scoring all of his 15 points in the final stanza. Frantz Pierre-Louis would put the ValleyDawgs up by 4 with only 1:18 left to play on a trademark left handed hook shot, but BJ McFarland lay up with 38 seconds left got the Kings back within two points. Chudney Gray would commit a foul, and John Thomas went to the line and converted both free throws to bring the lead back to four for the ValleyDawgs. Anthony Glover had a nice lay up with 24 seconds to play, and his ensuing foul put Darrin Hancock at the line, were he would hit both to push the lead again back to four.

After moving the ball to half court following, Mike Campbell was fouled, but he only made one free throw and the Marcus Fleming hit both of his free throws to bring the lead back to five with only 19 seconds left, as the ValleyDawgs scored for the final time. Mike Campbell hit a three-pointer, and then the Kings made a steal with only 3 seconds left in the game. Anthony Glover picked up the loose ball and fired it to a streaking Mike Campbell. But before Campbell could get off a shot, time expired and the ValleyDawgs won their 2nd USBL Championship 118-116.

Mike Campbell had a new USBL Championship Game record 38 points, breaking the old mark of 35 points held by Michael Anderson of the 1992 Philadelphia Spirit. Anthony Glover had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Kings. Chudney Gray had 15 points and BJ McFarlan had 14 points in the loss.

Marcus Fleming had 34 points and 14 rebounds, and was named the 2004 USBL Post-Season Festival Most Valuable Player. Joe Crispin had 16 points, John Thomas had 15 points, and Quincy Wadley had 14 points for the ValleyDawgs. Darrin Hancock became only the second USBL player to be a part of three championship teams, joining Brent Dabbs of the 1997-1999 Atlantic City Seagulls. There were 29 lead changes and 30 ties in the game, with the ValleyDawgs holding the biggest lead of the game at seven.
